There’s never a dull day for Mark Lee, who, at the age of 48, declared that he’s “not intending to slow down anytime soon”. He started artiste management label Galaxy Entertainment in 2011, and yesterday celebrated the opening of his new production company, King Kong Media Production. Mark, his partner CW Lim and his investors poured a seven-figure sum into the company.

With his empire growing ever more prosperous, we couldn’t help but to ask the artistes under his label, Jeremy Chan, Michelle Tay and Henry Thia, what they think of their boss.

“I’ve never actually called him ‘boss’,” Michelle mused. “Even before I joined him in his company, I’ve always addressed him as my senior (da shi xiong) instead. He also treats me as his junior (xiao shi mei); his character needs no other words to describe other than ‘very good’.”

Jeremy also had nothing but praise for Mark. “I’ve been with him from the start, and the reason is very simple: he’s very steady. Not only is he our boss, he’s also an artiste himself so he’s able to understand what we need in this industry.”

“To me, he’s Superman, because only Superman can do so many things, and who else would you follow apart from Superman?” Jeremy grinned. Henry chimed in, “Mark is someone who’s always on the rise – and that’s good for us because things will get even better for us as well.”

Even Marcus Chin, who was just one of the celebrity guests at the opening, declared that he will become a part of King Kong during the party. “He’s Singapore’s answer to Jacky Wu – so he’s someone you have to follow!” Marcus quipped.

He continued, “Mark is very sensible and he’s very experienced in dealing with both people and problems. He’s very mature – although he used to be an ah beng, he’s now an ah beng in sheep’s clothing, in other words, a warm-hearted ah beng.”

Mark shared that his company will not only be producing short clips targeted at the fast-moving social media audience, but is also looking to start filming its first movie this year. “We currently have three scripts on hand, all of which are comedies.”

“One is about a romance between a local and a foreign talent, another is about an agency that helps you with all your problems – even if you have trouble breaking up with your boyfriend, they will help you with it – and the last is about people who take certain things for granted, which ends up hurting the people around them. We’ll be reviewing the scripts and will pick the best one to work on before the year ends.”

In the coming months, he will also be looking to sign on four new faces to the team, “two good-looking guys and two pretty girls”, whom he will personally train in terms of acting and hosting, depending on where their talents lie. Don’t expect him to sign on any familiar faces, however, as he’s looking to sign fresh blood who have yet to get their share of the limelight.

Apart from his never-ending pile of work, he also shares parenting duties with his ever-supportive wife, Catherine. Their brood of three (Calista, 9, Marksonn, 6 and Calynn, 4) is looked after by both parents, depending on their respective schedules.

“My wife will be in charge of the hot cakes shop that will be opening soon. I’ll be totally hands-off for this venture, though I will give her advice and help her in whatever way she needs me to,” Mark shared. “If she’s busy with the shop, I’ll also take over looking after our kids – if my schedule permits. I'm still working hard to save for that third condo for our children."
