Fann Wong, Christopher Lee’s son makes cameo in ‘Doppelganger’?

It’s official: one guaranteed way to make Fann Wong – who’s already a perpetually perky person, from what we’ve noticed – even more cheerful is to ask her about her son, three-year-old Zed Lee.

Our theory was confirmed during our interview with the 46-year-old actress and her husband Christopher Lee, also 46, on the set of their upcoming WaWa-produced series Doppelganger last night. When Toggle asked if they’ve ever brought their little boy to work with them, Fann immediately beamed and exclaimed, “Of cooourse!”

And Zed adores these visits. So much so that after his very first glimpse at his famous parents’ profession (which was on Christopher’s birthday a month ago), he kept pleading for days afterwards, “I want to go work! I want to go filming!”

Fann finally managed to find a good time to bring him back to the set on a day when she and Christopher had different call times (his was in the morning, while hers was much later). “My scene was at a swimming pool, which I thought was perfect because Zed and Christopher could play in the water together while I filmed,” she explained. “They ended up swimming the whole day and got about four shades darker! (laughs)”

The impromptu family outing even resulted in a possible cameo from Zed in Doppelganger. According to Fann, the director couldn’t bear to ask Zed and Christopher to vacate the pool, so the father-and-son duo ended up being caught on camera, albeit with their backs turned.

“Who knows? If you look really closely in the background of my swimming scenes, you might spot Christopher and Zed somewhere in there as extras,” Fann teased with a chuckle.

When Zed wasn’t unintentionally making his potential onscreen debut, he was being extremely well-behaved. “If you tell him to be quiet when the cameras are rolling, he will really start speaking in a low, soft voice,” said Fann. “I don’t think he fully understands what filming is about, but he is aware that the adults are working.”

Fann has made room for another Golden Bell Awards trophy

A few days ago, Christopher made headlines – and hearts swell with pride – when he was announced as one of the nominees for Best Actor in a Mini-series or Television Film at Taiwan’s prestigious Golden Bell Awards for his role in TV movie The Long Goodbye. He previously won Best Actor at the same ceremony in 2014 for A Good Wife.

But he remains as humble as ever, even bowing in shyness when we congratulated him for the honour. “I think every nominee wants to win – it’s a nice accomplishment to look back at when you’re old – but at the same time, I want to be calm and have no expectations,” he shared.

Fann, on the other hand, seems to be more optimistic. “Whether he wins or not is up to fate and we look forward [to good results], but I have faith in my husband and I have already prepared an empty spot in his trophy cabinet to prepare for the new addition,” she said with a grin.

When asked if they will attend the event – happening on September 30 at the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei – as a couple, Fann hemmed and hawed for a few seconds before replying, “I’ll have to ask our production manager; it would be difficult to let the both of us go while we’re still filming, so it’s up to her [to approve my trip].”

At the very least, Christopher will attend the ceremony by himself. “I’ve known our production manager for 20 years, but if she doesn’t let me go, then our relationship will have meant nothing all this time,” he joked.

Darren Lim had trouble adjusting to living on land

Playing Christopher’s onscreen brother is Darren Lim, who is returning to local screens once again after his role in last year’s The Queen. The 44-year-old currently takes up acting projects on a freelance basis as he wants to be able to spend more time with his family and on his boat charter business.

Last June, after famously living on a yacht for four years, Darren moved his brood (former actress wife Evelyn Tan and their four children) to become land-dwellers once again – a change he admitted he had difficulty adjusting to in the beginning.

“I remember needing about four to five months to get used to living on land,” he said, explaining that he missed certain comfort zones on his houseboat. “My kids, on the other hand, needed only two weeks to adapt to the new environment. In fact, my youngest son (four-year-old Elliot) suddenly became afraid of the water after two months!”

Darren’s little ones were a big reason for the relocation, particularly his oldest daughter Kristen, 12. “She’s sitting for her PSLE (Primary School Leaving Examination) this year, so there’s no time to go out and travel so much,” he said, adding that it will be his 10-year-old son Jairus’s turn to sit for the important paper in two years’ time as well.

So will Darren ever be fully reunited with his floating former residence? “My wife and I plan to move back onto the boat in five or six years,” he said. But this time, it will be without the kids. “We will leave the house to the children and let our eldest take care of her younger brothers, so that they can have a taste of independence.”

Talk about throwing someone into the deep end of the pool to force them to learn how to swim by themselves! However, he has complete faith in them. “They already know how to cook their own meals, so I believe they will be fine," he assured us.

The young actors got to witness Fann’s acting prowess – specifically, her amazing ability to cry on command – while filming Doppelganger.

“Before the cameras started rolling, she was still laughing and joking around, but as soon as she heard ‘action!’ her tears immediately started dropping onto the floor! She cries so well!” exclaimed Xu Bin, who plays her onscreen son. Newcomer Jasmine plays his younger sister.

They also gleefully reported that every day at work was “a funny day”, mostly thanks to Christopher, who “always makes us laugh”. “Christopher makes the whole atmosphere on set feel very relaxed because he believes that’s the key to getting things done right,” said Xu Bin.
