Eight years after their last film (The Wedding Game) and 14 years after their last local drama (Always On My Mind) together, well-loved celebrity couple Fann Wong and Christopher Lee are (finally!) set to star in two of their first onscreen projects together since getting married in 2009.

The first is Chinese film Yi Nian (also starring Qi Yuwu), while the other is WaWa-produced series Doppelganger, which consists of three parts: a prequel that will be shown exclusively on Toggle, followed by the broadcast of a two-hour telemovie and the main drama on Channel 8. The prequel and main drama will also be aired in China.

Speaking to Toggle in separate interviews at yesterday’s lensing ceremony for Doppelganger, the TV sweethearts quipped that one of the biggest difficulties of working together was trying to contain their chuckles on set.

“[Fann] will take one look at me and burst out laughing; what’s so comical about my face?” Christopher grumbled in mock indignation, before theorising, “I think it’s because I make her think of something funny that happened between us at home.” (Fann just believes she’s become more easily amused since becoming a mother.)

But of course, sharing the screen with someone you’ve known for the past two decades has an abundance of perks as well. “After reading the script, I can predict how she’s going to portray her character; there’s no need to call her up and ask, ‘Eh, how are you going to do this?’” said Christopher, 45. “We also don’t need to waste time getting to know each other better.”

Fann, on the other hand, loves the freedom of being able to do whatever she wants to her co-star, be it resting on him when she’s tired or giving him a light smack when things aren’t going her way. “It doesn’t feel like I’m at work at all, it feels more like I’m on a playground,” said the 46-year-old.

Fann and Christopher’s son asked them for a little sister?

Naming the downside of working with his wife was a no-brainer for Christopher: leaving their 2-year-old son Zed at home. Although the toddler is in the capable hands of Fann’s mum, he understandably can’t bear to let both his parents step out of the door every day – or is it just his mother he misses?

“Zed will happily say ‘bye bye!’ to me but will whine to Fann,” Christopher jokingly complained, pretending to get angry again. “What’s the meaning of this!?”

While Fann and Christopher have stated several times that they hope to expand their brood further, it appears little Zed may be yearning for a younger sibling too.

“Fann has asked Zed if he wants a brother or a sister. At first he said ‘I don’t want’, but I think after making new friends at school, he recently said he wants a mei mei (little sister),” reported Christopher, whose face suddenly lit up as he declared, “I want [Zed to have] a mei mei too! But we’ll let nature take its course.”

Fann’s vivid account of Zed’s longing for a sister was a lot more entertaining. According to the actress, she was singing him a Christmas carol from a book about the baby Jesus when he suddenly started crying, “This is a sad song, the baby is alone!”

Shocked at his emotional outburst, Fann asked her son what they should do, to which he tearfully replied, “Mama, find the baby [and bring it] back! The baby [can] sleep here. [You] can give [my] porridge [to it].” She later found out that Zed wants a baby girl in the house.

Everybody together now: “Awww…”

Christopher will share an onscreen lover with Xu Bin?

As with most of their past shows together, Fann and Christopher are playing lovers in Doppelganger – but it’s more complicated than that. Christopher is taking on the roles of two completely different people: a struggling man called Li Wei and a wealthy businessman named Rui Ming, whose identity is stolen by the former after an accident. Fann’s character Si Ting is married to Rui Ming, and she does not suspect the ruse at first.

Because of Christopher’s multiple personalities, Fann won’t be the only lady in his life on the drama. At one point, he is also involved with Qiao En (played by Taiwanese actress Kelly Liao), who later ends up with Rui Ming’s son Zi Jian (played by Xu Bin).

Xu Bin shared that one of the first scenes he filmed with Kelly was a kissing one. Thankfully, it was a smooth-sailing shoot with no awkwardness, and it was over in just a couple of takes. It also helped that it was not the first time Xu Bin, 28, was paired with someone older than him (Kelly is 33).

“As I get older, it gets less awkward [to be paired with an older woman],” he said, admitting that he used to feel quite strange about it in the past.

When asked what it was like working with such respected seniors like Fann and Christopher, Xu Bin shared that although he was anxious about trying not to bring them down with a lacklustre performance, Christopher’s cheeriness helped to put him – and everyone else – at ease.

That said, the couple’s PDA (public displays of affection) sometimes left him and Jasmine Sim, who plays his onscreen sister Jia Wen, wondering if they should vacate the premises. “They are so sweet to each other that it makes the rest of us feel like third wheels!” he said with a laugh.
