What would you do if you knew you had seven days left to live?

This is the question several characters in brand new Toggle Originals series Soul Reaper find themselves facing, after being told that they can either give in to their morbid fate and leave this earth in a week, or find someone who is willing to take their place in death instead.

“It’s a very interesting story – if you knew you were going to die, would you accept it or find someone else to die in your place? Sometimes you might also discover that not everyone is willing to die for you, no matter how close they may be to you,” mused Romeo Tan, who plays Chief, the angel of death himself.

In the show, he employs a hairdresser named Soul (played by fellow duke Ian Fang) to be his messenger to the doomed beings – a job the latter reluctantly accepts after being told that it would help solve the mystery of his father’s untimely passing. Some of the duo’s “victims” include a sexy superstar with fears of being dethroned by a hotter, younger thing, and a rich young man with everything to lose.

Ahead, we speak to the stars of Soul Reaper to find out what they would want to accomplish in this life before moving on:

Romeo Tan

Character: Chief, the grim reaper

Are you afraid of death?
I think people respond differently to thoughts of death during different stages of life: for a 31-year-old such as myself, I am afraid, because there’s too much that I don’t dare to think about losing, but for an older person in their 50s or 60s, they are probably not as fearful.

What would you do if you had seven days left to live?
I would want to travel the world with my loved ones, be it my parents or whoever, and just take them to go and see the planet’s most beautiful places together.

What would you choose as your last meal?
An international buffet with all the expensive dishes I can think of: abalone, foie gras, truffles etc. Plus, you won’t have to worry about putting on weight since you’re going to die anyway! (laughs)

If you could choose someone to pass to the next world with you, who would it be?
From the show, I would pick Ian, because while we’re out there wandering and searching for the “road” to the afterlife, he can keep me entertained with his bad jokes. (laughs)

Ian Fang

Character: Soul, Chief’s assistant

Are you afraid of death?
Of course – who isn’t? But I would rather kill myself first, because I wouldn’t want anyone to die for me, nor would I want to die for anyone, because it’s just not fair. This world is already so unfair, judgemental and superficial. Okay, I would sacrifice myself for my mother and for my future wife without hesitation – but for friends like Jeffrey Xu, they can go ahead and die by themselves. (laughs)

How would you feel about dying at such a young age?
I would feel that it’s such a shame, because there is just so much left undone: I haven’t gotten married, I haven’t had children, I haven’t experienced a lot of things. But the hardest thing for me to leave behind would be my mother.

If you could choose someone to pass to the next world with you, who would it be?
Rebecca Lim, because we are good friends and this answer won’t offend her.

What would you do if you had seven days left to live?
Get married (to someone outside of showbiz) and get to experience what life is like as a husband. Look for anyone who has ever hurt me, fought with me, or angered me in my life, and treat them to a big meal and settle our differences once and for all. I would also donate all my perfectly functioning organs to others who need them.

Character: Angela, a celebrity who is told of her death

What would you do if you had seven days left to live?
Of course, I would love to visit every corner of the world, but even if I don’t get to do that, I’m fine because I’ve already been to a lot of places on my bucket list, so I’m happy enough. Besides that, I would take the opportunity to say some touching, cheesy words to all my friends and loved ones, because I’ve never dared to do that before! (laughs) Everybody is one step closer to the grave every day, so the important thing is to live life to the fullest and try to become a better person.

Are you afraid of death?
If I were struck down with a sudden and severe sickness, I would be quite worried, but after the initial fear is over, I would think of practical and sensible ways to deal with it. To be honest, I’m more worried about losing my loved ones, because when you’re gone, you’re gone, and it’s the ones who are left behind that suffer.

What would you give in exchange for extra time on earth?
I believe that when it’s time to go, it’s time to go, and you shouldn’t make any bargains. If you’ve lived life without any regrets then it should be easy to move on, and I hope that I have that attitude when my time comes.

Bonnie Loo

Character: Hazel, Angela’s personal assistant

Are you afraid of death?
Actually I am – even hearing the word scares me! I don’t think I would have the courage to die at the moment. When I think of death, I think of the worst ways to go, such as getting sick, committing suicide or getting into a car accident. (laughs) Plus, there are so many things I’ve yet to do… I would cry if I found out I were to die so soon!

What would you do if you had seven days left to live?
First of all, I would want to repay my parents for all the good they’ve done for me. As for myself, I want to see all my dreams come true, such as becoming a world famous singer, travelling to as many places as I can, and falling in love. I would also take part in various risky activities such as mountain-climbing and bungee-jumping, and eat hard-to-stomach things such as cockroaches and worms – I mean, you’re going to die already anyway, right? I think people who know they’re going to die become very brave because they have nothing to lose.

What are some types of roles you would want to take on before you go?
The role of a pervert. (laughs) I would be scared but I still want to try it. I would probably still limit myself when it comes to sexy scenes such as going topless or filming a bed scene, but as an actor I believe I should be more open, it would just take a lot more courage.

Shane Pow

Shane Pow

Character: Jude, a rich young man who is told of his death

Are you afraid of death?
Of course. Filming my first onscreen death scene has made me ponder over what it would be like to really die. I believe everyone is afraid of death, and for myself, it scares me because there are so many goals I haven’t achieved, places I haven’t been to and things that I haven’t done. If I were to leave just like that, I would feel very regretful.

What would you do if you had seven days left to live?
I would want to see the world – there are many countries that I haven’t visited.

If you could spend your last day on earth with anyone, who would it be?
If I had to choose between Ian and Romeo… I would bring the both of them, because Romeo can take my pictures and Ian can keep me entertained. Of course, I would spend it with my family as well. [We ask about his then-rumoured girlfriend, DJ Kimberly Wang, who has since confirmed their relationship.] Can ah, everyone lah. It’s my last day on earth anyway, so everyone can party together!
