The countdown has begun to the Lunar New Year, which falls on January 28. Among the local offerings this year is a music video by Andie Chen and Kate Pang’s online portal, Kandie Network titled ‘Ta De Fu Ji’ (loosely translated to ‘His Lucky Rooster’).

The hilarious video was uploaded on January 9 and has amassed more than 28,000 views in a day. In July last year, the network’s video of Kate giving birth to the couple’s second child, Avery, went viral and was watched over a million times within four days.

The music video for ‘Ta De Fu Ji’ was filmed over a three-day period in December, and Andie explained to Toggle over the phone that while he and his missus discussed the possibility of filming a Lunar New Year music video, they never imagined that they would be able to turn their brainstorming into reality.

Apart from filming at a HDB flat and common space, they also headed to various local landmarks such as Marina Bay Sands, the Merlion and the Marina Barrage. Andie had to juggle filming for upcoming Channel 8 drama, The Lead, which left most of the directing work to Kate.

Chuckling, Andie shared that his reason for filming the music video was because “both Kate and I have a strange sense of humour!” Explaining himself further, he mused, “We’ve always wanted to try different things and we also want to have releases that tie in with special occasions as well. We’ve thought of many different ideas in the past, but they weren’t any good until Kate wrote the lyrics for this song.”

Andie added that the rap that Kate initially wrote didn’t flow well, and that he tweaked it in order for it to flow better. After which, he put on his dancing shoes and piled on the guyliner to transform into the edgy rapper in the video. He let on, “I spent 15 minutes choreographing that dance and we wanted to come up with something that would look cute to kids and amusing to adults at the same time.”

While Kate and Andie undoubtedly exceeded expectations with their new video, the real breakout star is their son, Aden. The two-year-old’s dramatic crying scene at the start of the video has garnered a great deal of attention.

Explaining that the tears were not staged, Andie laughed, “I wasn’t present on that day of filming and he might have gotten up to some mischief on-set and Kate gave him a stern telling-off. He started crying and Kate almost shed tears watching him bawl, but held herself back from consoling him as we needed to finish filming the scene.”

The young star is no stranger to the limelight as he has grown up in front of the camera. While he has received numerous offers for drama roles, Andie expressed that he hopes for his little ones to be able to enjoy their childhood and will not consider any jobs unless the offer gives him sufficient time to play and rest.

Five-month-old Avery was also on-set while filming was taking place, as the bundle of joy is still being breastfed and has to be by Kate’s side “like a koala” at all times. “(Aden and Avery) get along well, and Aden kisses his little sister whenever he comes back from class. In his heart, I’m in third place with his mom and sister in first and second place respectively.”
