#1 Denied entry into Morocco

A couple of weeks ago, Jesseca Liu uploaded a series of photos and videos on Instagram, depicting how she and her husband Jeremy Chan were stranded at an airport in Morocco, where they were originally due to spend 10 days as part of their three-week honeymoon.

Upon disembarkation from the aircraft, Jesseca was informed at Morocco immigration that Malaysia passport holders required a visa to enter the country – something she had overlooked during her preparations for the trip. She was “rejected entry” and they were left stranded in the airport with no food or drinks.

“I was well-prepared for this trip except I did not read up about visa requirements. That was an oversight on my part lah. I should have called up the embassy to check instead of just reading about it online,” she said.

Thankfully, Jeremy was an understanding and supportive spouse and reassured her they could always come back another time.

“He didn’t complain or blame me for it… He was worried because we had to stay in the airport but there was nothing available there, and we couldn’t get through customs to get to the restaurants outside,” Jesseca recounted during an interview with Toggle at the imaging session for Channel 8’s Babies on Board on Monday.

According to Jess, they spent a total of four hours waiting in the airport, trying to find a solution to their unfortunate predicament. Matters were made complicated as the officials were not fluent in English and Jesseca and Jeremy didn’t speak the local language either.

After ding donging back and forth, a custom official finally led them through a special passageway and brought them to purchase over-the-counter tickets to leave Morocco.

The newly-weds booked themselves on the first available flight to Italy at a steep price tag of $800 per ticket – and with no itinerary or accommodation pre-arranged. “We were in a rush and time was tight. We had no choice, all other flights were full,” she explained.

They may have finally gotten their one-way tickets out of Morocco, but Jesseca and Jeremy were in for another surprise: the untimely death of their trusty black steed ‘xiao hei’ – the black luggage containing all their barang barang (colloquial slang for clothing and personal necessities) for their honeymoon.

“Our luggage was damaged upon arrival in Morocco and we bought a new one in Italy. Thankfully we could still drag it to our hotel,” she chuckled.

With no proper itinerary in place, the 38-year-old said they had to book their accommodation on-the-go for the first 10 days (“we would book tomorrow’s accommodation today, and the day after’s accommodation will be booked tomorrow,” she explained).

Their unplanned-for surprise trip to Italy was made easier with help from Jesseca’s Instagram followers who generously shared tips and recommendations when the actress wrote an SOS post.

“I received a lot of messages warning me to beware of pickpockets, but thankfully, we were lucky [and emerged unscathed],” Jesseca said.

Lest you thought this was the end of the “unfortunate” honeymoon adventure, Murphy’s Law was clearly in full effect for Jesseca and Jeremy.

#3 Train breakdown

When they were en route to Spain (they were two stops away from their final destination Granada) from Puerto Rico, their train got derailed.

“The train stopped for a long time and several announcements were made in Spanish, but we didn’t know what they were talking about. Then, we saw a group of people alighting the train and I wondered why there were so many people stopping here. Soon, everyone got off the train and it was empty.

“A man, who looked like he was in a rage, tapped Jeremy’s shoulder and said: ‘Get up and get out!’ He later explained that the railway track broke,” she said, adding that they eventually managed to get to their destination via bus.

While their honeymoon was marred by a bad start and small hiccups (including Jeremy getting pooped on by a bunch of birds), the couple continued their journey in good faith and soothed frazzled nerves with a spot of shopping. Correction: a lot of shopping.

In one of their Instagram posts, Jesseca was seen posing with a handful of shopping bags and she told us most of purchases are for friends and her mother. “I bought all my friends’ birthday and Christmas gifts in one shot, and did not buy much for myself actually,” she shared.

Apart from buying her a designer bag, did Jeremy have any other surprises up his sleeves for her?

“I think I gave him more surprises – the Morocco surprise is more than enough,” she laughed.

Babies on Board premieres May 9, 9pm on Channel 8.

In case you’re wondering why the couple did not post any photos together on social media, Jesseca explained that they were each other’s photographers (read: Instagram husband and wife), and the only shot of them pictured together was taken with the help of a local in Italy.
