After a hiatus of two years, local actress Joanne Peh will finally be making her long-awaited acting comeback with upcoming drama Dream Coder, which is set to premiere on February 7 next year.

“It’s been two years, time really passed by so fast,” Joanne sighed when we caught up with her during her imaging session yesterday (September 5).

The jet-setting actress, who just returned from Beijing, China with her husband, actor Qi Yuwu and daughter in tow also revealed that she has hired a caretaker to take care of Baby Qi while she’s at work, as both Yuwu and her will be hard at work in the days to come.

Yuwu, who will be in Singapore for the next two weeks, will be flying back to Beijing for work after that.

During our interview, Joanne let slip that Yuwu actually flew back to celebrate their second wedding anniversary, which falls on September 10. As Joanne will be working in the day, the lovebirds will commemorate the special occasion with a candlelight dinner at night.

In Dream Coder, Joanne plays Yayun, who joins a mobile app development company as a data analyst after discovering that her husband has cheated on her and abandoned their family. Later on, Yayun, who also has an eight-year-old daughter, finds herself caught in a love triangle when both Yao Wen Long and Desmond Tan’s characters confess to her.

“I’ve actually heard of coding before this, and was quite curious about it. I went to a coding class with my nephew in Guangzhou, China and found it quite interesting,” the actress shared, when asked why she agreed to take on the show.

In fact, the 33-year-old, who is the doting mother to one-year-old Baby Qi in real life, enjoyed the coding class so much, she has no qualms letting her daughter learn coding as well.

“If she’s interested, I’ll let her do it. Coding can help kids develop their imagination, to come up with their own games and challenges for the characters [in the game] to go through,” she shared.

The actress also affirmed that she does not plan to be a stay-at-home mum. “If you ask me, I wouldn’t wish to be a stay-at-home mum, I’m someone that needs stimulation in terms of my thinking, a new environment, [maybe] learn something new. I feel that this will be beneficial for both me and the family.”

Joanne also shared that she will not suffer from any separation anxiety while at work, especially after filming her travel programme, Unique Towns.

“It was harder to see her [when I filmed Unique Towns] overseas, as I’ll be in a different time zone occasionally. Now, I can go home and see her [after filming ends]. I’ll FaceTime her during my lunch breaks as well.”

The actress then mused that she feels Baby Qi might be able to tell if Joanne’s about to leave home for a long period of time.

“She wouldn’t really stick to me when she knows that I’ll be back soon. I’m not sure if she really can tell but when I was in Beijing packing my luggage to come back [to Singapore], she will stick to me even more. Previously, when I was filming for Unique Towns, the same thing happened! Once my luggage came out, she’ll start to stick to me and ask me to carry her,” Joanne recounted.

As Baby Qi recently celebrated her first birthday, Joanne and Yuwu organised a party for her, where they had the traditional zhua zhou ceremony as well.

While Joanne decline to reveal the exact item chosen by Baby Qi, she did share that it was something “related to the arts, maybe a chef, artist or a singer.”

“We were surprised because she had never seen that particular object, but I did observe beforehand that she seemed to have more interest in things related to the arts [as well],” Joanne shared.

“I’m not sure how accurate [zhua zhou] really is, maybe when she grows up, we’ll look back and tell you guys if it’s accurate!”
