The fact that they were now married still hadn’t sunk in when we caught up with local singers Alfred Sim and Tay Kewei, less than two hours after they exchanged vows in an intimate solemnisation at Shangri-La Hotel.

“We still have a lunch to go, so everything’s really hectic right now,” Kewei confessed during our interview before their wedding luncheon this afternoon, as her new husband piped up, “We still have a lot of things to settle.”

The newlyweds, whose nine-year relationship came to light during the Project SuperStar 2014 finals (where Alfred was crowned grand champion), threw a lavish awards ceremony-themed gala for about 650 guests at the hotel’s Island Ballroom.

Among the familiar faces we spotted in the crowd include Dasmond Koh, musical duo The Freshman, Sora Ma, and of course, the rest of the Project SuperStar 2014 finalists. When we caught up with a few of them to collate their well-wishes, they urged the couple to quickly have a little one – perhaps even an SG50 baby.

But Kewei and Alfred have no intention to start a family this year. “We don’t have any real plans for kids, but perhaps in two to three years’ time?” said Kewei, laughing that the Jubilee Baby Bonus, a gift pack that will be presented to all Singaporean children born in 2015, is “not attractive enough” to encourage her to become a mother any sooner.

So what will motivate baby-making plans? “Nothing much, actually,” Alfred chuckled. “We’ll leave things to fate.” They previously revealed that their careers will take a higher priority for now.

Since Alfred popped the question in May, the couple had to juggle between their hectic work schedules (she was recording and promoting her first Mandopop album Turn Back & Smile, while he was competing on Project SuperStar) and the stressful process of putting their nuptials together.

Thankfully, they had the help of Chère Weddings & Parties to handle the latter task. The planners even paid for a lot of the items and services in advance, and as a result, Alfred and Kewei confessed that they have yet to know how much they’ve spent for their big day. However, given that Alfred’s post-proposal surprise voyage to Japan already cost upwards of $50,000, it’s safe to assume that when it came to the budget of today’s event, the sky was probably the limit.

Speaking of their pre-wedding getaway, what’s next for their honeymoon?

Turning to his new wife with a smile, Alfred said, “It’s your turn [to plan our next holiday], right?” But it seems they’ve been so caught up with organising today’s shindig that they haven’t had time to think about their first trip as man and wife.

“Europe, maybe?” Kewei said. “Since we hardly get to take long holidays, we hope to go away for about two weeks.”

In addition to taking care of the wedding events themselves, Alfred and Kewei made sure not to neglect their beauty routines.

Kewei, a self-professed skincare addict, went for laser peel facials every two weeks all the way until two days ago, “just to make sure” her complexion was in tip-top condition for the cameras (and we can confirm that it was). Slim Couture ambassador Alfred, on the other hand, embarked on a weight loss program that enabled him to shed 4kg in six weeks.

Unfortunately, Kewei doesn’t seem to be very satisfied with her husband’s slender shift. “He is leaner now, but I prefer him more buff,” she sheepishly admitted.

While there were over 60 tables at the banquet, the solemnisation saw a much more intimate attendance of about 50 friends and family members. Alfred and Kewei exchanged vows in both English and Mandarin, after which the blushing bride could not help but start tearing up.

Another emotional moment followed at the luncheon, after a welcome performance of David Tao and Jolin Tsai’s ‘Jin Tian Ni Yao Jia Gei Wo’ (‘Marry Me Today’) by the Project SuperStar gang and the cutting of the cake. Kewei’s younger sister Kexin, who is also a singer, took to the stage to deliver a touching speech for the couple, and already started crying before she even began.

“If it weren’t for [Kewei], I would never have realised my dream of becoming a singer today,” she said. “As for Alfred, I’m really happy that he’s now a part of our family – he is someone I really look up to.”

Although we were initially told that Alfred and Kewei would be performing a self-penned love song at the gala, the couple clarified that they did not include this as they did not want to feel as though they were working at their own wedding.

Instead, guests were treated to a beautiful rendition of ‘Wen Nuan De Jia’ (‘A Warm Home’), an original ballad written by Kewei’s sister (who sang) and father (who played the erhu), as a slideshow of childhood family photos flashed on the screen, bringing a nice down-to-earth touch to the grandness of the gala.
