Local celebs tell us who holds their alcohol best, who enjoyed their nightlife the most and more

Local celebs lived it up at The Celebrity Retrolicious Party on Nov 30, hours before Zouk’s final Mambo Jambo night prior to the club’s move to their new premises.

Hosted by 987FM deejays Sonia Chew and Kimberly Wang and attended by a bevy of stars, including Huang Biren, Mark Lee (with his missus in attendance as well), Vivian Lai, Kym Ng, Desmond Tan, Ian Fang, Jeffrey Xu and more, the celebs partied the night away dressed in their finest retro getups.

Eight celebs also stepped up to get behind the bar as guest mixologists, whipping up cocktails for their fans and other partygoers as the night went by. Paired up in male-female duos, the first pair was Chen Han Wei and Pan Ling Ling, who passed the baton to Shane Pow and Julie Tan. Following which, Jayley Woo and Lee Teng took their places behind the bar before Carrie Wong and Pierre Png took up the final spot.

In between having fun, the celebs told Toggle about their party days (or lack thereof, in some of their cases), most interesting clubbing experiences, who holds their alcohol best and more.

Shane Pow’s guide to life after getting attached

What are your most interesting clubbing memories?

I have a lot of memories of clubbing - I started when I was in still in polytechnic. I have a lot of memories with my friends in this entire area. For example, we know where we once threw up, where we peed, and where one of my friends threw a glass bottle into the river when he was drunk. He got fined for that because there was a police officer behind him when he did that.

There were also friends who lay down on the ground and we had to drag him home, and places where we had fights - this entire area is somewhere we’ve been frequenting since we were in school.

How well do you hold your alcohol?

When I was much younger, I used to get pretty drunk because I didn’t know how much I could drink and I had no control either. Now that I’ve matured, I stop drinking once I start getting a little dizzy. I can hold my alcohol quite well - I’ve finished an entire bottle of tequila with one friend before in two or three hours.

Wise words from Shane…

I haven’t been clubbing (after I got attached) - even if I were to go, I’ll go with Kimberly! She wouldn’t have any restrictions on what I can or can’t do even if I go. I’ll tell you, it’s a trap. When a girl tells you that she’s okay, don’t do it no matter what. If she says, “It’s okay to go; it’s okay to talk to girls,” just don’t do it!

Pierre Png, Andrea De Cruz: Don’t trust what celebs tell you

What are your most interesting clubbing memories?

Pierre: For me, I hadn’t clubbed in a long time and during my stag night, I was sloshed. I was out for the count and ended up hugging a champagne bucket for the entire night. It was such a well-planned stag night and I had two strippers there! The moment they tapped me on the shoulder, I passed out.

Andrea: I told him that it was the one time in his life he could indulge in two sexy women stripping in front of him and he literally crashed. Our clubbing habits have definitely changed after marriage. When we first met, we used to go to clubbing a lot.

Take the “just friends” line that celebs give you with a mountain of salt

Pierre: Whenever we were interviewed, we’d say that we were just friends but we were all over each other. If I were a reporter, I’d say, “So friends kiss?”

Andrea: We used to party a lot, maybe three times a week even, and we could still wake up in the morning feeling fresh and go for filming and do our stuff. These days, we don’t even need to party. We just need to go somewhere and have a few drinks and we’ll be out for the count for the entire day.

What are your most interesting clubbing memories?

My mom likes to feel young so sometimes when I return home after a long day at filming, she’d ask me, “Are you going clubbing tonight?” and I’d say no, because I have to return to shooting the next day. She’d be disappointed and reply, “Can we just go for a little while and go home at like one or two in the morning?”

I’ll agree and call my girls, telling them that Doris wants to club. My mom doesn’t like to be called ‘auntie’, she has to be called Doris. When I tell them that, all of them will come down for us.

There was once during the Star Awards period, someone wanted to take a photo when they spotted me and my friends took that person’s phone and called the voting hotline on their phone!

I asked them what they were doing and they said, “If they want to take a photo, they have to pay the price!” They were alright with it and they’re more than happy to support me.

Wise words from Doris…

My mom told me that I can’t drink anything that has been left unattended at the table because she’s worried that someone might have spiked it. She said that such things happened back in her time and she said that women should protect themselves.

She also told me that we should buy our own drinks as much as possible and treat guys to a drink if they treat you to one.

Not long after my debut, there was a group of guys who approached my friends and I at our table. “Girl, could you let me buy you a drink?” I looked at him and said, “Can’t you see that I have an entire bottle behind me? Do you want some?” He felt embarrassed because he was probably only thinking of buying me one cup, so he turned around and walked away. I won’t let anyone buy me drinks.

What are your most interesting clubbing memories?

I have so many ‘worst’ clubbing experiences! I’ve been so drunk that I couldn’t remember how I got back home. The next day, I woke up I was on the living room floor. I was still living with my family - so imagine if you saw your son or brother lying in the living room!

I really didn’t know how I got back home. My brother said that he tried to bring me to my room but I was a dead load, so he couldn’t move me. My mom woke me up the next morning and I was like, ‘Oh shit.’

I have so many more - I’ve never gotten into a fight at a club before but there was another one of the ‘worst’ was when I got so drunk that I puked into a jug in front of the girl that I liked. I think some of it splattered on her as well. Having such a bad image in front of the girl I used to like made it one of the worst experiences - I was 18 or 19 back then. I think that made me lose all chances that I had with her.

I was so drunk that I jumped onto a friend’s car before. They told me the next day that I was wobbling around in the carpark. It was a very low car and so I jumped onto the roof of his car and my friends pulled me down and I dived into the car. They opened one side of the car and I just jumped in. The other side was closed so I hit myself against the door and I concussed after that.

The first girl Chen Hanwei clubbed with was Zoe Tay

What are your most interesting clubbing memories?

I used to club a lot. There was once when I was on the way home from the club when I noticed a lady in a Mercedes was following me home. I drove really fast and spent over an hour trying to shake her off. She wrote a letter and sent her photo to the company, saying that she was interested in me. I told her that it was really dangerous and not to do it again.

I heard that she was a rich person and that she liked to get close to male celebrities. That happened when I was younger - I don’t encounter such things any longer! I don’t know if she wanted to by my sugar mummy, but she really followed my car really closely on that night.

Why Zoe Tay is a boring clubber

Zoe Tay was the first girl that I clubbed with. We went to the club at the Hyatt - it has since closed down. We used to wear formal wear to the disco - I’d have to wear a tie and suit and girls had to wear dresses there.

She’s a boring clubber - she can’t drink and falls asleep with after she has one cup. Slow-dancing was the trend back then so we’d dance and chat at the same time.

Pan Ling Ling, the alcohol heavyweight

How well do you hold your alcohol?

I don’t drink much and I can hold my alcohol well. I don’t like getting drunk, but I like getting high. My husband doesn’t like drinking, so he’s the designated driver most of the time. Because he doesn’t drink, he can also protect all of us women.

Being young at heart is what matters

I only started going to clubs in recent years! I have a group of good female friends who felt that I was pitiful since I’ve never gone to a club before. They thought that I was a frog in the well. My husband and I don’t really have much of a nightlife so they brought us to a club to experience it.

I have a really high tolerance for alcohol! I’ve only seen others get drunk and start dancing on the tables – I find that really cute because you’ll see sides of others that you’ve never seen when they’re drunk.

What are your most interesting clubbing memories?

The most memorable experience I had was the first time I came to Zouk soon after I came to Singapore, because I threw up during that visit. After I threw up, they changed the sofa.

On how he and Felicia have talked marriage plans

It depends. Spending more time with my girlfriend is the most ideal. Felicia doesn’t frequent clubs so I try to avoid making her uncomfortable as much as possible. She hasn’t given me any restrictions (but) she worries that I’ll drink too much if I go and do something that would affect my image.

She’s actually nearby at another event now, so I’ll pick her up after things wrap up here and send her to the airport. She’s going to Japan for a holiday with her mom. I really wanted to go as well but I don’t have the time. I hope that I can bring her and her mom to Shanghai if there’s a chance to.

Hopefully, we can work something out for the Lunar New Year holidays,, but that won’t be the first time that our parents met. I hope we can get married soon, but such things can’t be rushed, so we’ll wait for the right timing before we make any decision. We’ve discussed it before but we’ll just go with the flow. I don’t think we’ll have a flash marriage but I would probably propose out of the blue.

Zhang Zhen Huan once got scared away by overenthusiastic clubbers

What are your most interesting clubbing memories?

I don’t come to clubs often. When I first came to Singapore, I went to a club and met a gay man who came on pretty strongly to me. I couldn’t really understand what he and his friends were saying but they were just really enthusiastic when they were talking to me. They were so enthusiastic that I didn’t know how to handle it. I was new to Singapore so I wasn’t used to it and I got scared off.

On why he stopped going to clubs

I don’t really like going to clubs because I can’t drink well. My stomach hasn’t been at its best recently so I haven’t had alcohol in a long time. It’s odd to come to a club and not drink, so I really haven’t been partying recently. I’m a very rational person who will never get drunk – I always ensure that I’m sober.

Ian Fang's unique way of getting a girl's attention

What are your most interesting clubbing memories?

When I was in polytechnic, I liked having fun and looking at pretty girls so I used to do lots of things. Girls would ask me for my number so I was happy about that. Older women would buy me drinks too.

There was a really pretty girl who was surrounded by people. My friend and I made a bet to see if I could get her to dance with me. I agreed and weaved my way through the crowd to put 10 dollars in her hand while saying, “Apple martini over there.”

She followed after me and threw the note at my face, saying, “What do you think I am? A bartender? A waitress?” I told her that I would never have been able to get her out from that crowd if I didn’t do that.

Nick Teo and Hong Ling's unfortunate drunk incidents

What are your most interesting clubbing memories?

Hong Ling: I went out with Nick and a couple of other friends when we first met. My temper was really bad so I remember getting into a fight with a girl a few years back!

Nick: I don't remember! I remember one that involves Hong Ling. We were at the karaoke and we were about to leave. We were a bit tipsy and one of our friends picked Hong Ling up bridal style. I don't know what happened and the guy started running but fell down halfway. Hong Ling got flung onto the floor.

Hong Ling: It was really painful! I was drunk so I can't really remember but they told me about it after that.

Nick: It should be a good experience for me because we laughed really hard.

Hong Ling: Nick got drunk at Hanwei's birthday gathering with the rest of the 118 cast. He started rolling on the floor and kept saying that he's tamago (egg) sushi. It was pretty funny because he kept rolling around in a public place.

Nick: I was really drunk but I remember people asking me why I wanted to be a tamago sushi. I don't know the reason either, but it could be because I really like eating it!

Vivian: For me, I’m alright if they finish partying early and I can go pick them up.

Ge Ping: They can’t go clubbing if they’re not of age. If they are underage, then they should be mature enough and I won’t need to control any of them. If you try to restrict them, they’ll end up not telling you anything and just going to clubs behind your backs.
