PSC 2016 puts on a bewitching show to raise $7.37 million

Last night (Oct 23), an assembly of singers, actors and DJs lent their support and star power to the President's Star Charity 2016 (PSC 2016), held at the newly christened MES Theatre at Mediacorp. By the end of the two-hour show, the annual event, now in its 17th year and themed ‘Just Like You’, had raised a staggering $7.37 million for the President's Challenge – almost $1 million more than last year's show.

A few members from the 58 beneficiaries even had the chance to perform with the celebrities, such as young dancer Jadyn Cai who shared the stage with Sezairi Sezali as he sang his new single 'Fire to the Floor', and beat-boxing rapper Danial Bawtan who lent his talents to the All Star Choir, a 42-member-strong ensemble that included familiar faces like Zoe Tay, Tay Ping Hui, Kym Ng, Jayley Woo, James Seah and more.

There was a sprinkling of international flavour courtesy of Taiwanese veteran chanteuse Chyi Yu, who performed her best-known hit 'The Olive Tree', and Jacqueline Hughes, who bewitched everyone with the powerful 'Defying Gravity' as the Wicked musical’s Elphaba. Taiwan-based home-grown songstress Tanya Chua also sang English number 'Game with Fate' before taking the opportunity to plug her upcoming concert in December.

In addition to the musical treats, the audience also had their funny bone tickled with several skits, such as one where President Tony Tan and his wife sat down for interviews with children in a Kids Say the Darndest Things-like clip. Host Chua Enlai's The Noose character Jacques Ooi also showed up to banter with Vernetta Lopez and Mike Kasem, who were introducing their new comedy show OK Chope!.

The light-hearted atmosphere took on a slightly more sombre tone during a special tribute to former President S R Nathan. During the segment, footage of Mr Nathan reciting the poem Desiderata at the PSC in 2007 was played as Taufik Batisah and the ITE Show Choir performed the touching musical portion – a fitting honour for the founder of the President’s Challenge himself.
