Happy Valentine's Day!

Inspired by Sheila Sim’s fiance's romantic proposal atop a mountain in Hokkaido, Japan, we invite a few other celebrities to share their proposal stories with us. You’ll be surprised at how pragmatic or creative some of them are when it comes to asking their other halves to marry them, from popping the question on the “throne” (yes, you read that right) to not proposing altogether.

A ‘top of the world’ proposal

Sheila Sim’s fiancé, whom she got to know via Tinder, originally planned to propose to her at sunset atop a mountain, during a recent vacation in Niseko. Alas, things did not work out as planned as they missed the golden moment. But the proposal must go on and he popped the question anyway, going down on one knee clumsily after some prodding from the actress. “He was in full ski gear and there were so many layers of clothing, but he eventually got down on one knee and I started crying,” Sheila recalled in an interview with Toggle.

The most Singaporean proposal

Vivian Lai may not be born and bred in Singapore, but the Taiwan-born host's marriage proposal from then-boyfriend Alan Ong was done in local flavor. According to Vivian, she wanted to invest in a piece of property and was viewing apartments with Alan. While they were waiting at the lift lobby at one of the showrooms, he casually said, “In that case, we have to go apply [for a house] to get married.” She replied, “Okay then” and the rest, as they say, is history.

The old-fashioned proposal

Like Vivian, Hong Hui Fang received no romantic proposal to speak of. Instead of proposing to her, Zheng Ge Ping approached her parents directly to ask for their daughter’s hand in marriage after he loosely expressed his desire to settle down with her. Hui Fang said her parents agreed to it in a heartbeat as they were more than happy to marry their 30-something year old daughter off before she got “left on the shelf.”

Well, if it’s of any consolation, Hui Fang never fails to receive a bouquet of flowers from her husband on her birthday every year – even when she’s filming aboard. Not too bad, right?

The proposal with a silver lining

Things were not going too well for Adrian Pang when he asked his wife, Tracie Howitt, to marry him in 1994 in London. They were together for about a year and on the brink of separation as his work visa was expiring soon and there was no way he could extend it. After a terrible meal of cheap greasy Chinese food, the couple took a walk by the Thames River in Greenwich where the unplanned proposal took place.

“It just seems as though everything is conspiring to force us apart,” Adrian said, recalling the exact lines he said to Tracie more than 20 years ago, during an interview with Toggle. “Maybe… Another way to look at it is that all these forces are conspiring to make us face up to the fact that in order for us to be able to stay together, we have to get married. So, I guess, what I’m saying is – will you marry me?”

She said yes, in between tears, of course.

The “spoil market” proposal

Alfred Sim pulled off one heck of a surprise proposal two years ago: First, he “engaged” the services of his wife and then-girlfriend Tay Kewei to perform at a local pub under the guise of a work gig, then appeared on stage when she was performing mid-way and popped the question by going on bended knee in the presence of family and friends. To top it off, he planned for them to go on a wedding photoshoot in Japan on the very same night itself. Most effort ever.

The private and intimate proposal

Jade Seah was secretly very relieved when her husband, Terence Lim, whom she knew since they were 16 years old (see picture on the left), proposed to her in private—specifically, over dinner at their new home. According to a “very shy” Jade, they were celebrating their third anniversary together when he surprised her with a self-made montage video of them and an emerald-cut diamond ring.

The proposal where the lady got down on bended knee

The deed of getting down on one knee is not only reserved for the men, and Priscelia Chan proves us wrong by bucking marriage proposal traditions: when Alan Tern went on bended knee and asked her to marry him, she agreed to his proposal by getting down on her knee too.

“I just did what I thought I should do. In retrospect, I think it’s because we are equals and soulmates [and] I didn’t think he should be the only one going down on one knee so I did the same,” she shared. How’s that for cool?

The fairytale proposal

This is as far as star-studded proposals go (it’s not every day you get your idol proposing on your boyfriend’s behalf, okay?) 987FM deejay Gerald Koh enlisted the help of Adam Lambert, who was in town for a concert in 2013, to hold up a sign that read, “Say yes to Gerald. He is a good catch!” Gerald’s wife Thia Zhixin, who is also a huge fan of Adam, was really touched by his gesture but did not say yes until the grand proposal in Disneyland Paris happened.

Unlike most of the couples on this list, Andie Chen and Kate Pang got married for the sake of convenience, because the “piece of paper,” as Andie puts it, would make their lives a lot easier with a baby on the way. Lucky for him, Kate didn’t mind that there was no proposal or wedding bling. The couple prefer to show their love through small, everyday deeds instead of big over-the-top gestures. Like when Kate sleeps with the kids to ensure that her husband gets sufficient rest before work the next day, or when Andie used the money, which he could have bought a diamond ring with, to make a really nice kitchen for Kate so that she can “do her stuff” and “make nice food” for the family.

Now, isn’t this thoughtfully romantic?

The proposal that took place on the ‘throne’

We all know about Pierre Png and Andrea De’Cruz’s love story – and the actor’s gallant deed of donating part of his liver to her when she suffered from liver failure in 2002. But Pierre’s proposal to his missus is a classic example of how not to pop the question – especially if she’s in the toilet doing her, uh, business.

In Pierre’s words: “One day, when she was in the toilet, the music came on and it was just the right feeling – bearing in mind that I had the ring for close to a week and was so afraid of losing it. So I knocked on the door—and she was sitting on the throne—and I went down on bended knee. She was shocked beyond words, needless to say, and she said yes.” Phew.

To this day, the man still gets the “eye roll” from his wife for doing what he did. “I’m amazed she can still roll her eyes that far back,” he joked. “But looking at all of the proposals these days, I’m really glad I did mine the way I did.”
