Joanne Peh thanked a lot of people during her All-Time Favourite Artiste acceptance speech – from her mother to directors to “those whose names I don’t know” – at last night’s Star Awards ceremony, but her husband Qi Yuwu was not on the list.

When probed about this at the media wall, the 33-year-old actress said with a laugh, “Actually, this award has nothing to do with him! It’s my fans who spent all their time and money to vote for me, and now that I have graduated, I think they can all breathe a sigh of relief. This award is from them so I will treasure it dearly, it really has nothing to do with my husband!”

But there was still plenty of love reserved for Yuwu: Joanne called him “the best thing that happened” over the past decade of her career (“I found my other half, someone to take care of me, yay!”) – a touching sentiment echoed by the 40-year-old actor.

“When I came to Singapore over 10 years ago, I didn’t imagine I would find a wife here,” he admitted after joining his wife halfway through her interview. “I didn’t even think about building a life and starting a family here.”

Now, the power couple is expecting their second child together, and Baby Qi’s younger sibling could be born any time soon (Joanne is already over nine months pregnant). In fact, they were fully packed and prepared to go the hospital, but to Joanne’s relief, she was able to attend the event and personally receive her trophy on stage without incident (save for some mild contractions and movements within the womb).

“I wasn’t sure if I would be able to make it [to the ceremony] because my baby’s head is very low and I could give birth at any moment, so we made a lot of arrangements just in case,” she shared. “Now that I’ve got my trophy, my worries are put to rest and I can give birth in peace!”

So are the second-time parents-to-be nervous about the impending arrival? “I think we’re more or less prepared for it,” said Yuwu, whom Joanne described as a “very calm” father.

Elvin Ng tears up at mention of parents

Elvin Ng was all smiles and laughter during his interview at the media wall with his shiny new All-Time Favourite Artiste prize – until he brought up his parents.

“My dad was only around to see the first half of my [Top 10] achievements,” he said of his late father, who passed away in 2012, before adding that his mother was recently unwell. “But she went for an operation and she’s fine now; I just hope that she continues to be healthy.”

The coveted Top 10 graduate trophy may now be in the bag, but the 36-year-old still believes he has a long way to go. “Being an actor isn’t easy – there are a lot of areas to excel in, and I can only continue growing in my craft,” he said. In his acceptance speech, he shared that he hopes to become someone who makes his friends and fans proud, so they can boast that “Elvin Ng is my idol”.

Does this mean Best Actor is his next goal? “I’d have to be nominated first! (laughs) There are previous roles I hoped would get nominated but it never happened.” However, he remains optimistic. “Perhaps [winning Best Actor] is something that will happen one day.”

For now, of course, he will revel in his All-Time Favourite status. “I’m happy for my fans; they are the ones who worked the hardest, and this award and the love they have for me is something that money can’t buy,” he gushed.

Will Quan Yi Fong leave Singapore to join her daughter in China?

Will Quan Yi Fong leave Singapore to join her daughter in China?

Quan Yi Fong’s daughter Eleanor Lee, who is enjoying a blossoming career in China, almost couldn’t make it back to Singapore for her mum’s big night due to her filming schedule in Xiamen, but made it home in time to perform a sweet serenade during Yi Fong’s All-Time Favourite spotlight.

During the mother-and-daughter’s joint interview, Eleanor admitted that she was worried about forgetting the lyrics. “It’s an important day for my mother, so I wanted to do exceptionally well,” said the 17-year-old.

When asked about their celebration plans, Yi Fong revealed that they will go out to eat bak kut teh, as Eleanor has a craving for the local dish before she returns to China. “This time I’m not sure when she will be able to come back, so letting her go is extra heart-breaking,” sighed Yi Fong.

At least the 43-year-old, who also nabbed Best Programme Host last night, knows that her daughter will always welcome her to Beijing with open arms. “I told my mum that whenever she gets tired [of Singapore], she can always come [to China] and I’ll be there waiting for her,” said Eleanor. “It’s good to have family around.”

So does Yi Fong see herself leaving her life in the Lion City behind to join her little girl in China? “As long as I’m able to work here, I will,” she said. “A good and responsible mother doesn’t necessarily have to be by her daughter’s side at all times; I need to trust her, and continue doing a good job here so I can be a positive influence on her.”
