Wedding bells to ring for Sheila Sim in January

Remember in January this year, when Sheila Sim confirmed that she said yes to her then-boyfriend’s marriage proposal? The actress has confirmed in an interview with Toggle for upcoming 2018 Chinese New Year drama 118 Reunion that a wedding date has been set for January 2018.

“I won’t reveal the exact date just yet,” she said with a chuckle. “We consulted a shi fu and he calculated that the date would be the most ideal for both my fiancé and I. He’s the same person I went to about my name change, and I felt that my life has been smooth-sailing since the change, so we went to him to ask about moving into our home.”

“We’re not particularly superstitious but the date is something that I think we can listen to his advice about,” she went on.

The 33-year-old shared that they have bought a house together, which the pair will treat as their love nest. “We treasure the time that we have together. A wedding should be about the couple, so we don’t intend to make it a huge celebration or invite too many people. We’re still enjoying time spent with each other instead of fretting over wedding arrangements,” she grinned. Instead of turning into bridezilla, Sheila has enlisted the help of a wedding planner because she’s “really lazy”, and the ceremony will be held in Singapore.

“As you know, we got engaged after knowing each other for quite a short period of time,” Sheila mused. “We thought of tying the knot at the end of the year or next year until the shi fu gave us advice about a month or two ago.”

What are Sheila’s plans for having children?

Her wedding dress will be “something she’s already worn before, but I won’t reveal more,” and the wedding can be summarised in one word: simple. Among the guest list will be the 118 family, and her secondary school buddies will be her bridesmaids.

“There’s really a lot of things that we haven’t prepared, so I really can’t answer a lot of these questions!”  the actress admitted sheepishly, “I used to want three children when I was younger, but it’s really too expensive to bring children up these days, so I think having two is enough.”

Sheila also added that she hasn't started planning for a family. “I think such things can’t be planned. It’s a gift to have a child so we’ll let nature take its course. Even if we don’t want a child at that point of time, it’s also possible to get pregnant, so we won’t force things,” she mused.

As for honeymoon plans, while nothing is set in stone, the pair will go snowboarding for their mini-moon because “he really enjoys it!” Their destination will be somewhere in Japan, but an exact location has yet to be set.

“When I first got to know him, he believed in marriage, but not in weddings. After time, he got to know how important weddings are to me. Getting married isn’t something that you should do for others, but I hope that my grandma, parents and family can give me their blessings, and this is how we’re proceeding with the plans,” she concluded.

Apart from something new brewing in her personal life, there will also be new developments in Sheila’s character in 118 Reunion, Hong Shanshan's life. After giving birth, Shanshan is unable to shed her baby weight and turns to rock climbing in a bid to get back to her pre-pregnancy self.

There, she meets rock climbing instructor Arthur (played by Chen Yi Xi), who she will have a budding romance with.

“Even though she has a husband who loves her very much, she also develops a growing interest in someone else. I think this is something that will flow with the story,” Sheila explained. “I’ve met Yi Xi the other day and he’s a very polite, respectful person. I’m sure that we’ll be able to grow our chemistry with time.”

She will also be wearing a fat suit in order to look the part of a new mother, which she chuckled “will definitely help me lose weight before the wedding because it really makes me perspire! I won’t even need to go on a diet.”

The big reunion between Ya Hui and Charles Lee

For fans of the Hong Jinzhi (also known as Qia Qia Hao) and Li Zhihao (better known as Chou Xiao Zi) couple, you’re in for a treat. This season, Charles Lee reprises his role as Ya Hui’s reel-life love interest once again, after he vanished off screens in 118 II following a car accident, where he was presumed dead.

“I’m so glad to see him back!” Ya Hui chuckled. “Finally, Jinzhi won’t have to cry anymore.” While the pair kept hush-hush over how exactly he will make his return, they teased that audiences can expect to catch a glimpse of him towards the end of 118 II.

118 Reunion takes place a couple of months after 118 II ends, and Jinzhi and Chou Xiao Zi end up getting married, “Charles grinned. “But something’s very different about him this time - and it’s related to the car accident that he was in during the first season. As for what it is, you’ll have to watch to find out.”

When we spoke to the production crew about why Charles has made his return, they shared that they conducted a survey with audiences, who voted his character’s return as one of the things that they’d like to see.

Both Ya Hui and Charles were surprised by that nugget of information, but thanked viewers with, “We didn’t know that we were loved that much by all of you, but we’ll definitely work hard to give you even more reasons to like us.”

Kate Pang returns to dramaland

This time around, we’re also welcoming someone very special back onto the small screens - Kate Pang. Her last acting project, Entangled, was released in 2014, making it almost three years since she’s last dipped her toes in acting.

“I really feel like a rookie today!” she bemoaned as we spoke to her during her imaging session. “The last time I did imaging, it was at the old campus, so a lot of things have changed since then. I didn’t even know that you can’t eat in the makeup unit anymore, until someone pointed the no eating and drinking sign to me while I was getting my hair done.”

What has caused her to finally make her return? “It’s because I’m broke…” Kate sighed dramatically, before adding with a chuckle, “Actually, I’ve always wanted to come back to acting - it’s just that I have a lot of other considerations when it comes to choosing projects. For the rest of the year, Andie will only be taking up shorter projects, so he’ll be able to be at home more. That means that I can spend longer periods of time outside, and there will still be someone to look after Aden and Avery.”

This time around, she will be playing a character she’s never played before - a former getai star who ends up being a tad unstable (mentally, at least). “I’ve been discussing how to express this role with Andie. There’s a lot of different ways to act like a lunatic, but I don’t want to be over-the-top, and ensure that my character is still relatable to audiences,” she explained.

She is also in the midst of contract discussions with Mediacorp to extend her full-time contract for two years.

We caught up with Andie separately, where we asked him about his plans for the year. “I’ll be focusing on improving myself,” he shared. “I took eight or nine years to get my Mandarin up to standard, and I think I’m still lacking in a lot of other aspects - my English, for example. It’s still very Singlish, and I hope to be able to reach a level where I can be understood around the world.”

Chew Chor Meng and Dennis Chew also have something up their sleeves - the pair’s first business venture together, a mookata (Thai barbeque-steamboat) stall, will officially begin operations tomorrow (July 1).

“The both of us really enjoy eating, which is why we thought of the idea of opening a F&B store together,” Chor Meng explained. “We decided to have our first one at a coffee shop, since the startup costs will be much lower.”
Nestled in the Kovan area, the mookata store, which opens for business from 5pm to 2am daily, is named 888 Mookata and is located at 212 Hougang Street 21.

“We won’t have an opening party or anything like that. It’s just a small store so it’s nothing too fancy,” the veteran actor explained. “We worked with two other partners to set up this stall, so they’ll be the ones who are mostly in-charge while we’re busy filming 118 Reunion.”

As for his plans to expand the business, Chor Meng let on that they are considering setting up, among others, a bistro, but that there have been no concrete plans yet. He revealed, “We only took a month or two to prepare for this mookata stall, but if we really do open our own store, it will take a lot more planning, money and preparations, so we’ll see how business is at 888 Mookata before we continue with our plans.”
