If the Star Awards trophies were given out based on artistes’ votes, then Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor hopeful Andie Chen would have walked away a double winner this year.

The first of three The Road to Star Awards episodes, a “countdown” of sorts to the main ceremony on April 16, kicked off with a live show hosted by Lee Teng and Pornsak last night. Throughout the hour-long programme, the performance category nominees, who were all seated together on stage, were asked to select their favourites for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress.

Andie, who is up for If Only I Could and Hero, ended up scoring the majority of votes for both Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor from his peers. However, it seems like his two children Aden and Avery may have had something to do with it.

“[I voted for him] because his son is cute,” deadpanned Zhu Hou Ren, while Rui En quipped that she picked Andie so that it can finally be his turn to treat her to a meal, instead of her buying things for his daughter (who is her goddaughter) all the time.

Jokes aside, Andie was still touched by the support, even going so far as to say that the bouquets he received on stage are even more valuable than the trophies being given out at the actual ceremony. “A lot of my colleagues gave me a lot of encouragement and I’m thankful for that,” he said.

Paige Chua, who is nominated for Hero, was the artistes’ choice of Best Supporting Actress, and her acceptance speech was as serious and sincere as if she were delivering it on the 16th. Zoe Tay was extremely humble as she accepted her prize for Best Actress (for You Can Be an Angel 2), saying, “I may not have the chance to say this again so I’ll say it now…I really enjoyed playing this character and I hope there will be a part three.”

That wasn’t the only honour Zoe was conferred last night. Several fashion stylists were asked to pick who they thought was the best dressed celebrity based on their outfits at past Star Awards shows, and Ah Jie came out on top for her bold and beautiful looks.

“Thank you Star Awards for giving us the chance to dress up,” she said, after revealing with a chuckle that her stylist is usually more nervous than her when it comes to selecting outfits at this time of the year.

While those accolades were all in good fun, three very real and legitimate awards were also announced last night: Toh Xin Hui was crowned with the Young Talent Award for her role in The Gentlemen, Martin Chan Fook Shin won his very first Best Director gong for C.L.I.F. 4, and Cheong Yan Peng and Ng Kah Huay were awarded Best Screenplay for The Truth Seekers.

At the end of the event, we were given an update on the bottom eight of this week’s Top 48 Most Popular Male and Female Artistes rankings, and it looks like supporters of Priscelia Chan, Hong Hui Fang, Aileen Tan, Lin Mei Jiao, Chen Tian Wen, Terence Cao, Chen Shu Cheng and Yao Wen Long had better buck up and keep those votes coming in if they want to see them make it into the final rundown in three weeks’ time.
