Dialect drama series Eat Already? is rolling well into its third season, and the cast made a regular stop in the heartlands to meet the fans of the series last week. Appearing in (almost) full force at the mid-season roadshow in Toa Payoh, Lin Meijiao, Zheng Geping, Chen Shucheng, Sora Ma, Marcus Chin, Nick Shen, Zheng Wanling and more spent time sharing tips on healthy living and aging to the crowd, which was mostly made up of the pioneer citizens.

Given that one of the messages that the series aims to deliver is how to live healthily, we couldn’t help but to wonder out loud just how healthy the cast members are in real life.

Who doesn’t eat cold food, who once got called fat by a director and who was once the 'trash bin' of the family? Click on to find out.

Zheng Ge Ping was once the ‘trash bin’ of the family

Self-professed health rating: 4.5/5

Ge Ping might be well-known for his hunky physique, but the 53-year-old stopped short at giving himself a full five out of five for his eating habits.

Admitting that he indulges in not-so-healthy food with his children once in a while – fried chicken with the skin taken off and other fried food are the usual suspects – he chuckled that he’s actually “the easiest to look after” in the family.

“I’m always the ‘trash bin’ of the family – I always finish eating whatever’s left on the table at the end of the meal (…) In the past, when I didn’t pay much attention to my eating habits, I’d eat just about anything!” he shared.

It was only after he started eating clean did his stomach lose its ‘ability’ to handle just about anything – when he eats something overly oily, he might end up running for the bathroom after 15 minutes. Yikes.

What does Ge Ping think of his children’s eating habits?

Given that both his children, Tay Ying and Calvert Tay, have officially stepped into the world of showbiz, we asked Ge Ping what he thinks of his children’s eating habits and physiques.

Smiling that Calvert has “some way to go” before he attains a good body, the proud father mused that his younger child is still 17, and still has potential to grow taller. “There are some exercises that are not suitable for him because of this, so when he gets older, there will be more for him to do,” he explained.

Meanwhile, for his daughter, he quipped, “As a father, I definitely hope that my children eat well. Actually, my children are pretty picky when it comes to food, and as long as they’re eating well, that’s enough for me. Well, of course, they can’t expand too much horizontally either!”

Chen Shucheng’s blood pressure woes are due to work?

Self-professed health rating: 4/5

Chen Shucheng is turning 68 next month (on October 21, to be exact), but the veteran artiste is still very much fighting fit.

“I’m not picky when it comes to my food, which is why I think I’ve got a good balance of all sorts of nutritional intake. I eat just enough of everything, which is also why my physique is ‘just nice’!” he smiled.

Despite being in Mediacorp for over four decades, Shucheng shared that he’s always been in the pink of health and rarely goes on medical leave. “I used to go for supper with everyone after filming, but stopped doing so in recent years because I’m afraid of putting on weight!” he let on.

However, that doesn’t mean that the thespian has no health woes. “My blood pressure is slightly high, and although it’s not at levels that are out of hand, my doctor advised me to take medication for it. He shared that it could be because of the rollercoaster of emotions that we have to go through during filming – all the arguments, worries and whatnot actually do contribute to our blood pressure rising.”

Self-professed health rating: 3.5/5

“When I was back in university, I thought that age was on my side, and since cup noodles are really convenient to make, I had them at least five times a week!” Sora confessed.

It was only afterwards that she saw the error of her ways, as she had diarrhea for three months straight, which included a strange “green liquid.” She only got better after consulting a doctor and making adjustments to her lifestyle – and yes, that means less cup noodles.

These days, her stomach revolts against her if she has two consecutive meals of fried food, and the 33-year-old now pays much better attention to her dietary habits.

“I go online and search for healthy recipes, and I try to make soup at least once a week to nourish my body as much as possible,” she shared.

She spends about S$200 a month on health products, and instead of religiously buying the same products all the time, she chooses to focus on different products during different periods so as to supplement the areas that need the most help at the time.

These days, Meijiao has one more thing to be proud of – her daughter, Chantalle Ng has been making waves in showbiz, recently wrapping filming for coming-of-age drama While We Are Young.

“Her co-stars Zoe (Tay), Rebecca (Lim) and Terence (Cao) were really nice to the children and often bought food for them to eat while they were filming,” Meijiao shared. “Chantalle put on about five kilogrammes because of this!”

“As a mother, I feel happy to know that she’s getting along well with everyone on set, but as a fellow female artiste, I can’t help but to worry a bit about her physique,” she laughed. “We all look heavier than we actually are on-screen, so I always ensure that I look after my health so that I look alright on camera. I think this is something that actors have to understand and keep to as a form of respect for your job.”

Thankfully, she hasn’t had to say anything to Chantalle, whom she let on has started jogging on a daily basis in order to shed the extra pounds she put on while filming. She chuckled, “It’s good that she knows herself best.”

Marcus Chin’s secret to staying healthy: indulging your cravings

Self-professed health rating: 4.5/5

Marcus has just one secret to staying healthy – eating everything in moderation, even your cravings. “There’s really no meaning to life if you pick and choose your food just for the sake of being healthy,” he chuckled. “For example, I love durians, but if I were to indulge in them, I’ll make sure that I stop at five pieces so that there’s some sort of balance.”

After eating healthier in recent years, his weight has also gradually dropped from 68 kilogrammes to 60 kilogrammes. “The friends around me aren’t that concerned about eating healthy, so it really takes quite a bit of perseverance to keep to my diet,” he confessed.

That being said, the actor is very picky about one thing in particular – warm food. “Sometimes while we’re filming, the food will end up cold by the time we get to eat, so I’ll only eat a few spoonfuls of it. I take it as a way of losing weight!” he chuckled.

If there’s one thing that he avoids these days, it’s having supper. “There was a period of time I always had supper and that caused me to have a severe acid reflux problem. If I have to eat supper these days, I’ll ensure that I lie down at a 45 degree angle so that it doesn’t happen again,” he explained.

Zheng Wanling’s stomach of steel

Self-professed health rating: 4/5

Zheng Wanling’s life in Panama is very different from her life in Singapore in one big way – her dietary habits. “Back in Panama, I’m really conscious about what I eat, so I give myself a four out of five. When I came back to Singapore, I think I’ll only get a two out of five because I keep eating whatever I want here – fishball noodles, laksa, I love it all!” she chuckled.

The actress shared that she doesn’t believe in health supplements, but at the same time, she avoids sweet treats, snacks and soft drinks. “The most important thing is to ensure that you have your meals at fixed intervals and maintain an optimistic frame of mind – that’s how you keep healthy!” Wanling quipped.

One ‘secret weapon’ that many would love to have is her self-professed ‘commando stomach’, which she says can stomach just about anything.

She said of her stomach of steel, “I remember when I was younger, my friends and I went to Bangkok, where I bought some chicken skewers while we were at the beach. I was enjoying it and they decided to buy it too, but they ended up running around looking for the restroom after a while! I was totally fine though – I watched them run while enjoying my coconut juice under the shade!”

Nick Shen was called fat by a director

Self-professed health rating: 4/5

You heard it here first: if you ever need to make something up to Nick Shen, chances are that chocolate and ice cream will likely get him to forgive you. Naming these two sweet treats as his Achilles heel, the actor mused that he tries to avoid fried food so as to maintain his weight.

“Male artistes’ faces get oily easily, and we sometimes even get pimples! If a huge one pops out, we’ll really be in trouble because it’ll still be obvious even if we have makeup on,” he confessed.

Nick also let on that it’s not just the females who worry about looking fatter on screen – after all, the camera mysteriously makes you put on pounds once you’re on it, males have that same problem too.

“When I was filming Three Women And A Half, my role was of a 18-year-old NSF (full-time National Serviceman). I had a blooming romance with Aileen Tan, and at the time I was a tad chubbier than I am now. The director told me that if I put on any more weight, I wouldn’t look like a young cheerful boy any longer,” he bemoaned.

This time around, as he shares the screen with Felicia Chin often, Nick confessed that he also lost weight in order to look proportionate next to her. He chuckled, “She’s so slender, especially compared to me, so I had to lose weight or risk ending up looking really round on screen. I think I’ve lost about three kilogrammes!”
