Leading a contingent of eight local production houses, MediaCorp Ah Jie Zoe Tay and Jeanette Aw received a warm welcome at China International Film & TV Programs Exhibition (CIFTPE), an international exposition of films and TV programmes, in Beijing yesterday.

Under the Singapore Pavilion, local films and TV content are presented to media groups, TV stations, distribution companies, film production and audio-video companies, broadcasting corporations and financial institutions from the region.

At the event, Zoe and Jeanette not only promoted upcoming Ch8 blockbuster drama The Dream Makers 2, but also spoke to several overseas media. The acclaimed actresses also had the opportunity to meet and interact with their Chinese fans.

Expressing her happiness to visit Beijing, Jeanette said that “it is always good to be back, and it is my honour to represent Singapore for a drama and role that is very close to my heart”. In addition, the 36-year-old thinks that the CIFTPE is an excellent time to showcase local talents and to let people from other countries discover Singapore’s pool of artistes and TV series.

Similarly, Zoe finds that interacting with foreign media and fans in person will allow them to better understand the content and direction of our shows.

In the thespians’ opinion, local dramas are peppered with a distinct local flavour – in terms of Singapore’s multi-racial society, language, food, lifestyle, the people’s unique traits and reactions to situations – that draws curiousity and attracts overseas viewers.

“Our culture is very different from Taiwan, Hong Kong and China – that sets us apart. We are also pretty good at [producing] period dramas based on the Nanyang theme, such as The Little Nyonya. We should try and do more of [those dramas] because overseas audiences don’t get the chance to come into contact with that often,” added Jeanette.
