2016: The year celebrities found love

Nope, it wasn’t just your imagination – there were plenty of dating, engagement and wedding announcements from celebrities this year. Ahead, we round up some of the most talked-about ones from Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and China:

DATING: Felicia Chin ❤ Jeffrey Xu

The Mediacorp princess and duke kept denying dating rumours even though they had already become an item in December last year. Yup, that whole “I like her but I need some time, we’ll see how it goes” display (complete with a shy smooch) at this year’s Star Awards was all for show – a show everyone fell for. Well played, you two.

It wasn’t until this October when they came clean about their relationship, and boy did they do it in style with two sizzling magazine spreads. Felicia, 32, explained to 8 DAYS that they “wanted to protect this (new) relationship”, but now that keeping things hush-hush is out of the way, she and her 28-year-old beau have – in the legendary lyrics of Frozen’s Elsa – let it go, posting wefie after wefie on their respective Instagram accounts and openly declaring their love for one another. It’s kind of adorable, actually.

Shane is another duke who found his duchess this year. The 26-year-old and his 987FM DJ girlfriend, 25, got close while preparing for the President’s Star Charity together in October last year, and officially became a couple this August. But unlike Felicia and Jeffrey, they weren’t exactly lying when they claimed they weren’t dating. “Back then, we were going out and getting to know each other better,” said Kimberly, referring to the time a sneakily-snapped photo of them hugging in a mall was published.

Like Felicia and Jeffrey, on the other hand, they are very open about their relationship on social media and at public events these days (albeit a little more toned down when it comes to the PDA [public displays of affection]). They even starred in a commercial for a hair product together, where Shane was shown going gaga over Kimberly’s flawless tresses. Those computer-animated heart eyes may have been fake, but we’re sure his admiration was very real indeed.

On the opposite end of the “wear your heart on your sleeve” spectrum are Jesseca and Jeremy, who are so notoriously tight-lipped about their romance that we sometimes wonder if their relationship confirmation was all a dream. Every attempt to probe for more details about their slightly controversial union is met with ambiguous responses or just straight-up rejection (we know, we’ve tried), except when they’re clarifying that according to Chinese customs, they can’t marry anytime too soon as Jeremy’s grandmother recently passed away.

Obviously, don’t even think about ever seeing them gush over each other on social media. In fact, we were taken by surprise when Jeremy, 35, shared a video of his lady love, 37, promoting her Hearts and Hugs episode, but of course, the attention was rightfully directed towards the beneficiaries of the charity programme.

DATING: EXO’s Kai ❤ f(x)’s Krystal

We all saw the consequences of SM Entertainment confirming the dating news between Kai’s bandmate Baekhyun and Girls’ Generation leader Taeyeon back in 2014, so when the main dancer of the K-pop supergroup was officially linked to Jessica Jung’s little sister in April, we weren’t one bit surprised when things turned sour among distraught fans. While there were still many who voiced their happiness and support for the good-looking pair, both 22, some more extreme adverse reactions ranged from insulting them online to posting a creepily defaced photo of Kai.

The hoo-ha surrounding them seems to have calmed down lately, and both parties have gone on to enjoy their respective careers: EXO recently won big again at this year’s Mnet Asian Music Awards and had a successful Christmas comeback, while Krystal is slowly but surely making her return to the acting scene with a cameo in Legend of the Blue Sea.

DATING: Hyun Bin ❤ Kang So Ra

This Korean celeb couple didn’t bother playing games with the media and fans, and candidly confessed to their relationship through their respective management agencies after a website first broke the news. Considering that they had only been together for about two weeks, we’d say that this was quite a bold – and not to mention rare – move on their part.

According to reports, Hyun Bin, 34, and So Ra, 26, first crossed paths at a work meeting in October and grew closer over sharing their concerns with one another (a.k.a. the good old heart-to-heart talk). Public reactions were significantly less dramatic than if either of them had been a K-pop idol, although we did find a few amusing comments that brought up Super Junior’s Leeteuk, who was So Ra’s “husband” in reality programme We Got Married.

The Chinese actors skipped the “are they dating?” speculation phase and went straight to dropping the “hey guys, we’re married” bombshell on their respective social media accounts in May this year. The pair was introduced to each other by their manager and dated for over a year before registering their marriage.

Earlier this month, Xiang Yu, 31, and Zi Han, 38, walked down the aisle in the majestic Castell De Santa Florentina in Barcelona, Spain (where they also spent their honeymoon), before returning to Beijing to throw a makeup wedding banquet for friends and family who could not make it to Europe. We especially love how the newlyweds donated all their red packets to animal charities (something fellow animal lover Desmond Tan would surely approve of) and visually-impaired orphans. Definitely a noteworthy way to make your big day even bigger than yourself!

MARRIED: Shu Qi ❤ Stephen Fung

A twenty-year friendship blossomed into love for the ultra-secretive celeb couple about four years ago, but they refused to admit anything until – boom!they were married in a ceremony as low-key as their romance on September 3 this year. One of the only times Shu Qi, 40, remotely alluded to their relationship before that was in June, when she shared a rare wefie with 42-year-old Stephen as a way to one-up the paparazzi that were stalking them (and to jokingly plead for them to airbrush her makeup-less face).

Their nuptials took place in the middle of a filming trip to Prague, Czech Republic, and even the cast and crew only knew about it one day before. The newlyweds then released a statement announcing the good news, revealing that they have no plans to throw a banquet or party, and squashing any inevitable baby rumours that might spring up… but they eventually kept popping up again, again, again and again anyway.

Come on, we’ve been friends for so many years”, Ruby said as-a-matter-of-factly when asked by reporters which aspect of Wallace she likes the most (great response, we say). The good-looking pair announced their relationship on May 20 (or “520”, which sounds like “I love you” in Mandarin), and tied the knot in Bali this August, with plenty of famous friends such as Fan Bingbing, Vicki Zhao, Hu Ge, Nicky Wu, Shu Qi and Zhou Xun specially flying over to attend the various merriments.

The announcement of “baby” came along pretty quickly after “love” and “marriage”, and Ruby is currently reported to be in her final trimester of pregnancy. The 40-year-old and her husband, 36, are believed to be cutting down on their workloads in order to prepare for the arrival of their new family member, whom fans are already eagerly looking forward to meeting early next year.

Even the couple’s parents didn’t know there was going to be a wedding when they travelled to England in March, on a trip that was supposedly meant for both families to get to know each other better. Tavia and Him ended up returning to Hong Kong as husband and wife, after registering their marriage and taking some lovely wedding photos in front of Leeds Castle.

Not wanting to leave their friends out of the celebrations, the lovebirds, who dated for six year before tying the knot, held a ritzy banquet a few months later in October, which had a myriad of Hong Kong’s biggest stars in attendance. At the ceremony, Him, 32, surprised his 37-year-old wife by suddenly showing up in a Rilakkuma (a popular Japanese bear character) costume. It sounds like a funny sight, but even Ron Ng and Vincent Wong couldn’t help but tear up along with the newlyweds as Him tried to serenade Tavia with a love song.

MARRIED: Michelle Chen ❤ Chen Xiao

Michelle and Chen Xiao had the classic reel-to-real romance when they started dating after co-starring in 2014’s The Romance of the Condor Heroes, in which they played teacher-and-student-turned-lovers Xiao Long Nu and Yang Guo respectively. The couple registered their marriage this July, less than a year after confirming their relationship, and held their wedding ceremony two weeks later. It was also a double cause for celebration, as Michelle, 33, was reported to be three months pregnant shortly after she and Chen Xiao, 29, registered their marriage.

On Dec 20, they became proud parents to a baby boy, nicknamed “Xiao Xing Xing” (Little Star). The new mum, 33, shared their first “family portrait” featuring only their hands on her Facebook page, prompting a wave of congratulations and well wishes from friends, fans and fellow celebrities.

Another celeb couple who brought their love from TV screens to reality is 32-year-old Hye Sun and 29-year-old Jae Hyun, who were paired up in 2015 Korean vampire drama Blood. Although the actors’ representatives initially denied reports that they were talking about marriage, they became husband and wife in May this year, two months after announcing their relationship (and no, it wasn’t a shotgun wedding).

Instead of spending money on a lavish, high-profile shindig, Hye Sun and Jae Hyun opted for a down-to-earth, intimate and private dinner party with close relatives in attendance. The extra funds that could have gone to an extravagant wedding event and luxurious honeymoon were then donated to a children’s hospital to help further research and build more space for patients – a move that garnered well-deserved praise and admiration from netizens.

And the workplace romances keep on coming. Cecilia, 29, found her very own prince charming after working with him on massively popular Chinese drama Scarlet Heart, and in January 2015, Nicky, 46, announced that the two had registered their marriage.

It would be over a year before they would hold their nuptials. Ahead of the big day in Bali, the couple released a collection of stunning pre-wedding photos taken in New Zealand, but nothing could compare to the epic reunions that happened at the wedding itself: in addition to the attendances of their Scarlet Heart co-stars like Damian Lau, Yuan Hong and Annie Liu, guests were also treated to a rare performance by Nicky and his former Little Tigers bandmates Alec Su and Julian Chen. Talk about a #throwback!

MARRIED: Jean Danker ❤ Glenn Ong

Uncertainties, pressure and the tragic passing of Jean’s mother put a stop to the DJ couple’s original wedding plans in 2012, but it finally took place earlier this month – five years after Glenn first proposed (well, as they say, better late than never). The newlyweds held a simple but stylish sunset solemnisation on Dec 16, followed by a dinner banquet later that evening that was attended by many of Jean’s CLASS 95 colleagues.

Although it is Glenn’s third marriage (after fellow DJs Jamie Yeo and the late Kate Reyes), Jean happily assured us that she is not bothered by her husband’s past, and even jokes about it from time to time. The 38-year-old also praised his ability to believe in love even after going through two divorces, naming it as one of the reasons she considers him “The One”. All together now, everybody:  “Awww…”
