Confession: we took over 600 photos of INFINITE’s L (Kim Myung Soo) at last Friday night’s half-hour press conference – a fact that would probably horrify the South Korean idol, who has stated that he prefers taking photographs over being photographed.

Then again, how could you blame us? The 180cm-tall, modelesque, doe-eyed and dimple-cheeked 25-year-old was made to be adored by cameras. But more than just being extremely good-looking, Myung Soo also showed a myriad of other remarkable sides during his weekend visit to our sunny shores for his first solo fan meeting.

Read on to find out how Myung Soo impressed us during his media appearance at West Coast Plaza and on Saturday night’s fan meeting at Resorts World Theatre, and who knows? You just might become a new fan (and if you already are one, you’ll certainly love him even more).

When he displayed his absolute professionalism

Where do we begin? From arriving early for all his appointments to refusing to sit down before the press conference because he didn’t want his clothes to get wrinkled, Myung Soo displayed the behaviour of a consummate professional multiple times, whether we witnessed it ourselves or heard it from others who were close to him.

But the most inspiring thing was the fact that despite battling a sickness that had him coughing and clearing his throat multiple times (poor thing), Myung Soo was as sincere, sporting and sunny as ever, refusing to let his physical conditions bring his spirit down because he wanted to show everyone his best side – and we really, really appreciated his successful effort.

At the end of the fan meeting, he admitted that he had been worried beforehand as his face was swollen – what? He still looked great – and he wasn’t feeling well. However, he quickly urged fans not to worry about him as he recovers very quickly. Let’s hope that’s true and that he returns to tip-top shape as soon as possible.

When he gave good, practical advice to fans

Before the fan meeting commenced, attendees were invited to write down their concerns and drop them into a box. Myung Soo then picked out three pieces of paper on stage and, instead of getting the owners of those messages to join him on the platform, he went down to meet them instead, making the audience go wild as their beloved oppa suddenly became so much closer to them (more on that in our next point).

When the first girl asked what she should do about her lack of self-confidence, Myung Soo advised her to just do whatever it is she’s afraid of doing first, and then, “Once you break this wall, it will be much easier when you have to do it again.”

He then gave expert-sounding tips on how the second girl can receive more affection from her cat (as the owner of a feline himself, he would know) and to the third girl, who was having trouble getting out of a negative mindset, he suggested that she spend more time with people who will help her see things positively, and to never give up even if it’s a 99 percent hopeless situation because there is still that one percent.

We couldn’t help but admire just how patient, genuine and detailed he was with his opinions, instead of settling with a dismissive “believe in yourself!” blanket statement. Who knew Myung Soo was such an excellent counsellor?

When he flaunted his love for his fans

We saw a glimpse of how adoring Myung Soo is of his admirers at the public press conference (there might as well have been hearts in his eyes), and it grew into a full-blown demonstration at the fan meeting.

Like we mentioned earlier, Myung Soo made it a point to get closer to the audience by walking through the aisles of the theatre, giving high fives and shaking hands at times. When he realised that he was about to go down the same lane as he did earlier, he turned around and walked to the other end of the room, making sure that more people had their chance to see him up close.

Another example took place during the game segment, where four lucky audience members were tasked with re-enacting a scene with Myung Soo from his latest drama Ruler: Master of the Mask, and he had to choose the best actress out of the bunch to win an autographed card with her name on it. However, he couldn’t bear to just pick one victor, and all four girls walked away with a valuable prize of their own. How sweet!

All right, so Myung Soo’s love and talent for photography may not be news to devotees, but it was a point that was driven home at the fan meeting when Myung Soo showed off several gorgeous, never-before-seen snapshots he took all over the world, including during this recent Singapore stopover (the subjects were the Merlion and kaya toast).

“I always carry my camera along with me and try my best to take lots of pictures,” he had said at the media conference. He also shared that he hopes to release a follow-up to his successful two-part photo essay book L’s Bravo Viewtiful, and urged fans to look forward to it (we’re sure they already are).

When asked if there’s any other creative area that he wishes to explore after singing, acting and photography, the multi-hyphenate hinted that he indeed has something in mind. “I hope to show you one more aspect other than these three, so if you wait for me, I will come up with a new venture,” he said. Wonder what it will be?

Back in June, Myung Soo was honoured with the title of MBC DRAMANET’s Actor of the Month for his stunning portrayal of Lee Sun in Ruler: Master of the Mask. However, he confessed that he still feels “lacking” and that he will continue working harder to produce even better results in the future.

His extreme modesty popped up again at the end of the fan meeting after a surprise video of dedications from a Singapore INFINITE fan club was played on the big screen. While Myung Soo appeared visibly touched after the tributes, he admitted, “Every time I watch fan videos I feel a bit strange, and sometimes I wonder if I’m worthy of all this love because I think I still lack a lot. I will do my best to succeed in my career so if I do well, I will come back to meet more fans.”

Awww. While we do like down-to-earth attitudes, Myung Soo really shouldn’t be so hard on himself.

We’ve seen our fair share of emcees attempting to introduce Singlish to Korean stars, but Myung Soo’s lesson at the fan meeting has certainly become one of our favourites.

Instead of the usual stuff like “lah” and “shiok”, Myung Soo was taught the sarcastic “abuden?” (which roughly translates to “if not, what then?”). Soon, he was correctly responding to all kinds of remarks with the term, and his pronunciation got better every time.

Myung Soo also sang a line from ‘Singapura, Sunny Island’, which he said he learned during his last visit here. Combine all this with his love for kaya toast, and well, Myung Soo might as well be considered one of the Lion City locals now.
