What does Red Velvet like best about SHINee?

Video: Philip Ang, Aaron Ho

It’s 4.30pm on a Friday afternoon and the Toggle team is backstage at the Shilla Beauty Concert, awaiting Red Velvet’s arrival for our exclusive interview, packed into their hectic schedule. Prior to this, they were at Terminal 4 for the media conference, and that very night, they’d stand on stage at the Suntec Convention Centre to perform in front of thousands of screaming fans.

As time ticked by, we were greeted by the sound of their label mates SHINee rehearsing for the same concert, and needless to say, were duly impressed by their vocal skills despite lead vocalist and leader Onew being absent from the event.

After SHINee wrapped up their rehearsals, the sound of music from the next room started wafting over - a number of currently trending songs, including BTS’s ‘DNA’ and ‘Go Go’, along with Sunmi’s ‘Gashina’ were among those we recall hearing.

Towards the end of TWICE’s ‘Likey’ (which we admit we were humming to, too), in strode Red Velvet, who were cheerily singing along to TWICE, and we would later find out that the room next to ours was their waiting room - so go figure.

During the course of our short 10-minute interview, the girls made the most of the time and told us all about their latest album, which was released a week before their trip to Singapore, what they’ve learned from their SHINee sunbaenims (industry seniors), and the happiest moments in their lives.

Read on for more.

Welcome back to Singapore! If you had a chance to explore the island, what would you want to do most?

Irene: I’m very happy to be able to come back to Singapore. The fans greeted us really warmly as always, which was a great source of energy for us. As for where we’d want to go, I hope to be able to eat chilli crab this time around! The last time we came here, we ate really delicious chilli crab, so I came here with the wish of wanting to eat it again.

Wendy: I’d like to go to Gardens by the Bay, because we’ve never been there. I’d also want to go to Universal Studios - I think it’d be really fun.

What are your travel must-haves?

Irene: Firstly, I always bring cleansing products, basic makeup and body lotion along with me. If I have all of these, I’ll be able to do my work with a happy heart.

Joy: For me, I need to have a bottle of perfume with me all the time. I’ll always be in a good mood if I have perfume with me.

Tell us more about your new album Perfect Velvet.

Irene: Our second album is named Perfect Velvet, and like the title suggests, you can see an upgraded and more mature Red Velvet through this release. There are a total of nine songs, including our title track ‘Peekaboo’ in this album, so we hope that everyone will show their support for our album.

What’s your favourite song from your new album?

Joy: Personally, I like the song ‘Kingdom Come’ the most because this is a music genre that we’ve never tried before. We hope that you’ll listen to it many times and show support for it.

What are your fondest memories of your rookie days, and what do you miss the most about being a rookie?

Seulgi: When I was a rookie, I wasn’t used to a lot of things but at the same time, I was really excited. I was also very excited to have overseas performances. The thing I miss the most is that sort of feeling.

Wendy: All the moments that I had on stage are really special to me and I can remember all of them.

You recently had your comeback with Perfect Velvet. What concept would you like to try in the future?

Wendy: It hasn’t even been a week since our 'Peekaboo' comeback, so I haven’t really thought about our next comeback. I personally want to do a girls' hip-hop style in the future, because we’ve never done that before. If we have a chance to, we’d love to try it out.

Your debut song was titled ‘Happiness’. When do you feel the happiest?

Yeri: We recently held our solo concert. Meeting our fans during that time was the happiest time for me.

Wendy: The happiest moments would be whenever I’m with the people that I love and whenever I’m with the people who love us.

Seulgi: It’s the same for me. When we’re on stage, we feel really energised whenever the audience sings along with us. In that moment, we really get a lot of energy from them. Being a singer is our job, but I really feel very happy during such moments.

Have the SHINee members given you any words of advice on your performances?

Irene: There isn’t anything in particular, but as always, we as Red Velvet will always give our best when performing.

Wendy: They always give us words of support whenever they see us. For today, we’ll also do our best with the mindset that we should work hard together.

What have you learned from SHINee when you watch them perform?

Wendy: I personally learned from how they enjoy performing on stage. I think it’s really fun to watch them and they’re really professional, so that’s the point that we’re supposed to learn from them.

Yeri: SHINee is always giving their best whenever they perform, and that makes us feel like we should be working just as hard as they do.
