Chow Yun Fat had no plans to get married again

Hong Kong actor Chow Yun Fat’s wife, Jasmine Tan, recently revealed that he initially had “no plans to marry” her when the two were dating.

In a recent interview with Apple Daily, Jasmine said that the actor would constantly remind her that “he would not marry her.” He attributed this to his short-lived 9-month marriage to fellow actress Candice Yu, and did not want to go through that again. As Jasmine was not thinking of marriage at that time, she was comfortable simply being his girlfriend but did not give up hope as she mentioned that “love is unconditional and such minute things should not bring one down.”

It seems that she might have been right as the 62-year-old actor randomly proposed to her when he returned after an overnight shoot in New York at 7am. She said that his proposal was very simple - he casually said “let’s get married”, without even preparing a ring or roses.

Jasmine was so shocked at that time and did not question his actions even till this day.

The two then registered their marriage in the United States in 1986 for just US$15 (approximately S$20) and became husband and wife.

They later held an official wedding banquet in 1987 to fulfil Jasmine’s father’s wish of attending his eldest daughter’s wedding.

Although Jasmine did not get a grand proposal or wedding, she deemed being Yun Fat’s wife "the best gift from heaven.”

The two have been together for 31 years and remain very loving, always making the effort to celebrate each other’s’ birthdays together.
