Hong Kong veteran actor Eric Tsang was presented with the Star Hong Kong Lifetime Achievement Award at the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) yesterday (July 13) after starring in low-budget film Mad World.

At the age of 64, the actor felt that he was “too young” for a lifetime achievement award but he took his words back as soon as he heard that Kong Lung (late Hong Kong actor) passed away three weeks after he received the same award.

“I heard about it and it scared me, I will have to live past the next three weeks no matter what,” he said jokingly.

With NYAFF’s focus on budding filmmakers this year, Eric felt that it was apt for him to receive the award as he has interacted with countless younger directors in his projects. Furthermore, Mad World is the debut film of Hong Kong director Wong Chun.

“I feel like I didn’t waste 40 odd years of hard work,” said Eric. “I’m very happy to be able to gain recognition from everybody, this is a great encouragement for me.”

The actor’s role as Tung’s (played by Shawn Yue) father in Mad World earned him accolades internationally as he took home the Best Supporting Actor award at the 36th Hong Kong Film Award and Best Male Actor award at the Malaysia Golden Global Awards just to name a few.

The low budget HK$2 million (approximately S$350,000) film also went on to gross HK$10 million (approximately S$1.7 million) at the box office.
