It looks like Fan Bingbing will have an even harder time convincing movie makers and brands about her bankability now.The release of her much-debated project Air Strike (also known as Unbreakable Spirit) was cancelled yesterday,

following her tax evasion charges two weeks ago. The movie was originally set to have an Oct 26 release date in the US and China.

Director Xiao Feng, who had worked on this project for eight years and shot it three years ago, confirmed reports of its cancellation on Weibo. “Even the truth is of no remedy to the situation [and] no matter how innocent you are, it’s hard to avoid getting implicated,” he wrote.

The director also lamented that it was “time to let go” but was upset having invested—and wasted—years on his labour of love.

He thanked the production team for their support and apologised to viewers in his post too, writing that he believes the “heaven has eyes” and the people involved will get their “just deserts” in the end.

The film, which is headlined by Hollywood actor Bruce Willis, also features a bevy of A-listers from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, such as Nicholas Tse, William Chan, Liu Ye, Janine Chang and Korean actor Song Seung Heon, to name a few.

Bingbing was alleged to have been paid RMB 10 million (approximately S$51.98 million) for her four days’ work. An unaccounted RMB 50 million (approximately S$9.93 million) was reportedly misappropriated in her yin-yang contracts, to evade taxes.

The movie’s producer Wang Ding told Chinese media that the production cost was kept under its original budget of RMB 150 million (approximately S$29.8 million), and that actors who starred in it took a pay cut for their participation in the project.

News of Bingbing’s dual contracts for Air Strike was made public by former CCTV host Cui Yong Yuan in June this year when he accused her of signing two separate contracts to evade taxes. Although he retracted his statement shortly after, Chinese authorities ordered an investigation into the matter which led to the actress’ house arrest and subsequent RMB 884 million (approximately S$177 million) fine.
