Last night, Taiwanese model Lin Chi-ling announced that she has tied the knot with Japanese actor Akira, who is from J-Pop group EXILE. The good news was announced on the duo’s respective social media platforms. Following the announcement, hashtags related to Chi-ling shot up in the search rankings of Chinese social networking site Weibo.
The announcement took many by surprise, especially as it alludes to the fact that Chi-ling might just have a bun in the oven. Many netizens were also disappointed that Chi-ling had not ended up with Taiwanese singer-actor Jerry Yan, with whom she has had a much publicised on-again, off-again relationship.
Last night, Chinese media outlet Sina Entertainment contacted Jerry’s manager for a comment on Chi-ling’s announcement. According to Jerry’s manager, the 42-year-old was initially shocked when he heard the news from his manager.
“Is it true?” Jerry asked, before going on to congratulate Chi-ling when his manager confirmed that she had indeed tied the knot.
“Congratulations to them,” he said. He then continued with filming for his latest project.
Other than Jerry, a host of celebrities have also congratulated Chi-ling online, from Taiwanese actress Shu Qi to Taiwanese actor Jimmy Lin.
“Congrats, congrats. Wishing you a lifetime of bliss,” Shu Qi wrote in her caption, after reposting Chi-ling’s Weibo announcement.
However, the most hilarious post came from Jimmy, whose Chinese name Lin Zhi-ying (林志颖) is similar to Chi-ling’s (林志玲).
Uploading screenshots of a number of Chinese entertainment outlets mistakenly using Jimmy’s Chinese name while reporting on Chi-ling’s marriage announcement, Jimmy wrote, “(I) received a number of congratulations, but I’m not the one getting married. It’s Chi-ling (who’s getting married), here’s wishing her happiness and bliss.”
Jimmy also added the hashtag “Lin Chi-ling is married”, which shot up the search rankings last night, as well as a hashtag of his own, “Lin Zhi-ying is already married”. He went public with his relationship with Taiwanese model Kelly Chen in 2009. They officially tied the knot in 2013, and have three sons together.
