Jimmy Lin was taught an important (and expensive) lesson recently. The Taiwanese actor was fined NT$5 million (approximately S$230,000) for editing and reposting a photo that did not belong to him.

The 42-year-old edited his face onto a picture of a group of bald men walking together and uploaded it online to commemorate the day he hit 2.1 million followers on Weibo.

The post went viral and eventually caught the attention of Zhu Qing Fu, the photographer behind this image. Qing Fu was said to be “deeply offended” by Jimmy’s act of vandalism to his work and decided to press charges against the actor.

Jimmy was found guilty of copyright infringement, infringement of the rights of alteration and authorship and was sentenced to a public apology on top of a hefty fine.

After the incident, the actor apologised for his actions on Weibo again and advised his followers to “respect intellectual property rights.” He also promised to pay the fine.
