Joe Chen estimated to lose S$12.15 million over drink-driving charge

Taiwanese actress Joe Chen was booked on charges of drink-driving last Thursday, after running a red light. She was found to have an alcohol level of 0.67mg in her system.

After being released on bail of NT$100,000 (approximately S$4,500), the actress posted an apology on her Weibo account, explaining that she was heading to get some supper after having a drink at home, and that she was unaware that she had exceeded the alcohol limit.

Joe, who shot to fame after starring in the Taiwanese drama, Fated To Love You, has shifted her focus to the Chinese market in recent years, starring in dramas like Swordsman, Stay With Me and Love Actually, which were all well received by the public.

Taiwanese TV host Xu Sheng Mei recently shared her thoughts on the charges, predicting that Joe’s career as an actress will not be badly affected. However, the bulk of the 38-year-old’s income comes from her multiple endorsement and advertisement deals, which require Joe to have a good public image, which has been affected by her recent drink-driving charge.

And since an estimated one-third of Joe’s income comes from her endorsement deals, the actress could lose up to NT$270 million (approximately S$12.15 million).
