Those who’ve been keeping up with showbiz news would know that Kenneth Ma didn’t exactly have the most smooth-sailing 2019, but it looks like his 2020 is off to a good start: after over two decades in showbiz and 12 nominations in the category, Kenneth Ma was finally crowned Best Actor at the 2019 TVB Anniversary Awards last night (Jan 12) for his role in Big White Duel.

The joy of his win was clearly shared by everyone in the room as the 45-year-old was honoured with deafening cheers and a standing ovation. Ali Lee, who presented the award with Kenneth’s ex-girlfriend Nancy Wu and his rumoured new squeeze Natalie Tong, even screamed with delight after opening the envelope.

Kenneth himself, on the other hand, had an endearingly stunned expression on his face as he exchanged handshakes and hugs with those around him before literally being dragged up to the stage to receive his shiny new trophy.

“I’m really shocked,” he said, after managing to compose himself (talk about stating the obvious). “I would like to thank everyone for this reaction. It makes me feel like a winner even if there wasn’t an award.”

The well-loved actor went on to admit that he didn’t think he stood a chance of winning after seeing his fellow contenders (Pakho Chau, Vincent Wong, Joel Chan, and Benjamin Yuen). “I’m very lucky that I got to act in Big White Duel.”

During his backstage interviews, Kenneth shared that even his own mother didn’t expect him to win, but he believes she would be very happy for him. He added that he plans to have a celebratory dinner with the cast and crew of Big White Duel. After the media session, Kenneth adjourned to TVB City for a mini celebration with his supportive fans, who came armed with light boards and champagne.

Other big victors of the night were Kara Wai, who also scored her first TVB Award for Best Actress for her role in The Defected; Kalok Chow, who won Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Come Home Love: Lo and Behold; and Candice Chiu, who was named Best Supporting Actress for her role in Barrack O’Karma. Veteran actor Lau Dan was conferred the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, which he said was the first award in his 52-year acting career.
