Taiwanese band Sodagreen was the biggest winner of the night at the 27th Golden Melody Awards, bagging a total of five awards that night.

However, the band shocked everyone with a bombshell at the celebration party later that very night – Sodagreen will be going on a three-year hiatus.

The band’s manager announced the news at the party, and revealed that the band members will be making use of the three years to rest after being in the industry for over 10 years.

“The hiatus was decided by both the company and the band members, after much deliberation. The members also have their own personal savings, so [the hiatus] will not affect their standard of living,” their manager explained.

It was also reported that last year, Sodagreen embarked on two different world tours last year, performing over 20 shows, and scored a video game endorsement, netting them a total of NT$26.4 million (approximately S$1.1 million). Thus, each member is estimated to have earned NT$4.4 million (approximately S$180 000).

Christina, the director of Sodagreen’s company, Willin Music, also revealed that the members will not be barred from participating in other activities in the entertainment industry during their hiatus. For example, she shared that member Wu Tsing-Fong can still continue to write songs for other artistes, and even perform on stage as well.

Additionally, the band is also planning for a tour in Germany, after working with the GermanPops Orchestra for their latest album. As the details of the group’s Germany tour are still being ironed out with the German organisers, Christina divulged that if the tour really happens, Sodagreen might just come out of hiatus after less than two years for that tour.
