After Vivian Hsu, Sonia Sui is the latest foreign celebrity mother to give birth in Singapore. The Taiwanese actress and model posted a message and shared photos of her newborn son, Max, on Facebook yesterday at about 2pm.
“The birth is done, mother and baby are well,” she wrote. “Natural birth hurts so much, but seeing him makes the pain worth it.”
A photo of the baby, with its shut eyes and head full of hair, bore the message: “Hello everyone, my name is Max.”
The photos appeared to show markings from an IV needle on the infant’s arm and an ECG electrode, hinting at a premature birth, to which Sonia’s manager replied, “Max arrived a little early, so he got some fluid in his lungs, but it’s not a big problem.”
The brave Sonia endured natural birth because she had heard that natural birth is beneficial to babies. Even though natural birth can enlarge the pelvis, leading many female celebrities to choose c-section, Sonia’s manager said that she had always intended to go for natural birth.
Taiwanese singer Lai Pei-Hsia, stepmother to Sonia’s husband, Tony, is not known to have come to Singapore for Sonia’s giving birth. Asked whether she missed it because Max was born prematurely, Pei-Hsia didn’t respond, only saying, “Since the beginning my husband and I agreed that their baby’s birth should be announced by them, it’s their joy to share.”
Even Taiwanese actor and Sonia’s long-time ex-boyfriend Yao Yuanhao made a simple statement through his manager: “Congratulations to her.”
Taiwan media reports that after being introduced to Tony and a whirlwind courtship, Sonia married him this January and announced her pregnancy in May, going from single to becoming a wife and mother in less than a year.
During her pregnancy, Sonia often shared Facebook status updates on how was she was doing. The couple came to Singapore in August to prepare for delivery.
