Ella Chen’s son steals spotlight at S.H.E’s 17th anniversary concert

Even Hebe Tien and Selina Jen didn’t know that the 1.5-year-old was going to make an appearance

Taiwanese girl group S.H.E held a free tw0-hour concert for 50,000 fans yesterday (Sep 11) at Taipei’s National Theatre and Concert Hall in celebration of their 17th anniversary – but it was one tiny fourth new member who ended up stealing the spotlight from Selina Jen, Hebe Tien and Ella Chen (at least for a moment).

A few songs into the gig, Ella’s husband Alvin Lai suddenly carried their 1.5-year-old son, nicknamed Jin Bao or “Strong Baby”, to join the trio on stage. The delightful move surprised not just the audience, but Selina and Hebe as well, who did not know about this sudden addition of a guest star.

According to Ella, only she and her husband knew of the arrangement beforehand. In fact, she proudly reported that she had even sought her baby boy’s permission. “I asked him if he wanted to go on stage with me to sing ‘Genesis’, and he said yes!” she said.

Despite the massive crowd and flashing lights, the toddler did not display a drop of stage fright, happily soaking up the attention and charming thousands of spectators with his cuteness. But hearts and attention weren’t the only things he stole – he also refused to let go of Hebe’s microphone, prompting the jokingly displeased singer to quip, “My ‘rice bowl’ has been taken from me. We’ve only sung four songs and this is turning into Jin Bao’s solo concert – that’s not what people came here for!”

When Jin Bao said his goodbyes to concertgoers (after giving an idol-worthy flying kiss), the nostalgia-inducing trip down musical memory lane resumed. For starters, there was the stage setup, which was built to resemble a girls’ dormitory (the name of their debut album is Girls Dorm) and had their signature colours (pink, green and blue) as the main palette. The Mandopop queens also greeted fans with their signature line (“Hi, we’re S.H.E, the ‘girl friends’ of guys and the ‘good friends’ of girls!”) at the beginning of the showcase.

And then there was the repertoire of 22 timeless tracks, such as ‘Magic’, ‘Tropical Rainforest’, ‘Say You Love Me’, ‘How Have You Been Lately’, ‘Super Star’ and more. The girls also treated the audience to their very first public live performance of 2004’s ‘Keep Smiling’, complete with a motivational message. “When times get dark, you need to remember to keep a smile on your face,” encouraged Ella.

With emotions running high towards the end of the concert, Hebe expressed that she’s touched that although the three S.H.E members all come from different backgrounds and have different personalities, they were able to become each other’s biggest pillars in life. Selina added that the relationship they have with one another is the best present she has received from God.

Although nobody directly addressed the recent reports of Ella not renewing her contract with the group’s label HIM International Music (thus leading to panicked speculation that S.H.E might disband), there was hope that the group will go on in their parting words: “We’re turning 18 next year so we definitely have to do something special for it – see you at our 18th birthday party!”

We have one question, though: will Jin Bao be making a special guest appearance again?
