Celebs declared their love for Singapore on National Day

Majulah Singapura! On Friday (Aug 9), social media feeds were taken over by the colours of red and white as Singaporeans wished their beloved country a happy 54th birthday. Even those who were away from home found various ways to show their love, and captions ranged from short and sweet to long and insightful. They all had one thing in common, though: the #SGPride was strong.

JJ Lin and Stefanie Sun did a joint live stream on National Day

Two of the Lion City’s proudest musical exports got together via a joint Instagram live stream on National Day and delighted fans with a duet of the NDP 2002 song ‘We Will Get There’, which was originally performed by Stefanie.

During the stream, JJ, who was in Hong Kong, also revealed that he had been working on a new song for Stefanie for the past two to three months, and that he had written a lot of versions because he wanted “the best song for her”.

As much as we - and many other fans, we’re sure - wish the stream could have lasted a lot longer, Stefanie admitted she was worried that her son would suddenly rush into the room and get exposed to everyone, so after cutely wishing JJ’s mum (who made a brief appearance as well) a Happy National Day, the broadcast ended.

Do more of these things, you two!

Joshua Tan’s girlfriend created a filter for National Day

A few patriotic Singaporeans created Instagram Stories filters to show their love for their country this National Day, and one of them was none other than the Ah Boys To Men star’s girlfriend Zoen Tay, whose creation plants two small Singapore flags on the cheeks. Subtle but effective!

Dennis Chew apologised for his role in the controversial ad

On Wednesday (Aug 7), the DJ-slash-actor took to social media to post an apology for his role in a controversial electronic payment provider ad that sparked outrage for its use of “brownface”. Dennis, who is Chinese, portrayed four characters of different ethnicities in the ad, including a Malay woman and an Indian man, for which he had his skin visibly darkened.

His statement on Instagram reads, “My role in a recent ad has caused much disappointment. For many days I held back what I have to say, afraid of making things worse. I feel terrible about how things turned out. I cannot undo things but I would like to say to everyone, I am deeply sorry. We live in a harmonious multiracial society and we must never take it for granted. I will set higher expectations of myself. I will do better by my family, friends, colleagues and most importantly, all of you.”

Nathan Hartono addressed his own “brownface” accusations

At the start of the week, the singer shared some photos from a magazine shoot, where he was dressed up as three legendary musicians. However, his photo as Freddie Mercury was met with backlash from several netizens, who slammed him for darkening his skin to portray the late Queen frontman, who was of Parsi descent.

On Thursday (Aug 8), Nathan broke his silence on the matter, explaining that he had been responding to each disapproving commenter with private direct messages. He also shared the contents of the DMs, which explained that there was “nothing done to specifically make [his] skin a darker [colour]”. “It just so happens that, as far as Chinese people go, I’m on the tanner side of the spectrum. No makeup was used… If other photos made my skin look different, I would attribute that to lights, and relative [colour] schemes,” reads part of the message.

In his public statement on Instagram, which he revealed he had avoided making at first “because [he] did not feel the need to add more noise to a genuinely important conversation”, he shared “a few images that [he hopes] will clear the air” and summarised everything with, “This isn't brownface. My face is just brown. Be nice to one another, love and kindness over anything else.”

Baby Qi had a “simplified” birthday celebration...

Joanne Peh and Qi Yuwu celebrated their daughter’s fourth birthday on Wednesday (Aug 7) with a family trip to the zoo. “In line with my desire to simplify our lives, I decided that there would be no party, no themed decorations or heaps of presents this year,” wrote Joanne.

Instead, Baby Qi was asked to pick “one present, one cake, one place to celebrate and one friend to invite”. “We had a picnic, fed the giraffes, took the carousel 4 times and got up close with some animals at the River Safari. We didn’t finish all the exhibits but it didn’t matter. She was happy and grateful. (sic)”

“My wish for her — that she grows to make sense of what celebrations really mean, especially so in a time where resources seem easily available — because we must never forget to be prudent.” Now that’s some great parenting there, if you ask us.

...while Zed’s was a little more extravagant

Last year, Fann Wong and Christopher Lee’s son had to spend his birthday in the hospital (the poor thing). Well, we hope this year’s celebrations (yes, plural) have more than made it up for that: on Wednesday (Aug 7), Zed got to enjoy a VIP tour of S.E.A. Aquarium, where he got up close and personal with sea creatures and enjoyed a party with a pretty awesome ocean-themed cake.

Then, on his actual fifth birthday on Friday (Aug 9), another party was thrown for the National Day baby at Kiztopia. This time, the theme appeared to be insects, which Fann says Zed is into right now.

Stay healthy, Zed!

“Ruivin” reunited on the set of ‘Old is Gold’

Can you believe it’s been seven years since Elvin Ng and Rui En were last paired up in a drama (in 2012’s Unriddle 2, to be precise)? Thanks to Old is Gold, fans will get to see the beloved coupling get together once again (or will they?) as Elvin joins the series as a dapper CEO who falls for Rui En’s character, creating a love triangle involving the two of them and Xu Bin.

Filming for Elvin’s scenes, which will be shown from episode 94 onwards, began last Thursday (Aug 8), during which he delighted fans with a wefie. “Guess it’s a happy and all-new reunion! But what took so long (her hair has grown so long)! Well, I think we (sort of) missed us, do you miss us? And which of our dramas do you like best?” he wrote.

So then, what’s your favourite #Ruivin show?

(Yes, more #Ruivin.) Can you say #squadgoals? Last night (Aug 10), Dennis Chew's pals sprung a surprise advance birthday celebration for him (his actual birthday is on August 15) during a dinner outing. However, he is mysteriously nowhere to be found in the group pic with Romeo Tan, Felicia Chin, Jeffrey Xu, Rui En, and Elvin Ng, which Romeo acknowledged with his #sorude hashtag.

Perhaps he was still taking time to recover from his surprise. Just look at those shocked eyes when they brought the cake out for him!

Sharon Au also got a birthday surprise

Another "victim" of a birthday surprise was Sharon, who was originally invited for "a quiet candlelight romantic dinner for two" at her pal Michelle Chong's place, only to "walk into Jeanette Aw’s sticky date cake" (which Jeanette baked) and "a room of friends I haven’t seen in a [long] time".

And her first thought? "Thank God I had make-up on!" We're sure some women can relate.

Desmond Tan’s fans surprised him on set in Taiwan…

The actor, who has been based in Taiwan filming a super-secretive project (seriously, his manager refused to tell us anything about it) for the past couple of months, was shocked to see two of his fans suddenly show up on set earlier this week, armed with snacks and drinks for the entire production team. So sweet, right?

… where he experienced his first earthquake and typhoon

In scarier news, it was also the week that Desmond had his first experience of two natural disasters that commonly occur in the country. In the wee hours of Thursday morning (Aug 8), a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck Taipei, waking him up with “a huge jolt” that “felt like someone hit the bed with a hammer” and making his room start “swaying vigorously”.

Although he said it “was quite a scary experience because [he] was living on [a] high floor”, he miraculously managed to go right back to sleep because he had an early shoot. How did he do it!?

Then, the next day, Typhoon Lekima, said to be the strongest since 2014, struck the city. Desmond shared videos of the rather terrifying sight outside his window, followed by his indoor activities (cooking and watching movies). Glad he’s safe!

BLACKPINK celebrated their third anniversary

Last Thursday (Aug 8) marked three years since the top girl group burst onto the K-pop scene, and many loving tributes were splashed across social media by fans (a.k.a. BLINK) and the members alike.

Joey Yung had epic guest performers at her concerts

It’s certainly not every day you get to have one of the iconic Hong Kong Heavenly Kings as a guest performer at a concert that isn’t theirs, but the stars somehow aligned for Joey, and she surprised fans at her Hong Kong showcase when Jacky Cheung joined her on stage for a song.

That’s not all: for the next shows, she got Ekin Cheng, Miriam Yeung, and JJ Lin on board. Well, the audiences certainly got a massive bang for their buck!

Awww, we love friendship. The three K-pop stars are known to have been good buddies for a long time - so long, that they were able to recreate a five-year-old photo of them in a “stack”. And the cutest part is: they posted the same photos at almost around the same time.

Three f(x) members reunited for the first time in four years

Missed seeing the members of f(x) together? So did the members themselves. It’s been four years since the girl group’s last comeback, so seeing them (well, most of them, at least - Victoria couldn’t make it due to her schedule) reunited on stage at last weekend’s SMTOWN concert in Tokyo was a huge treat for fans indeed.

“Missed us,” wrote Krystal in the caption of her photo. Amber also uploaded a sweet snap of her, Krystal, and Luna, thanking MeU, as the fandom is called.

The celeb couple are now certified open water divers after receiving their certificates in Indonesia earlier this week. In his post, Nick admitted that the course was “quite challenging”, but they both managed to complete it. We also learned that the trip was arranged by Gill Divers, a scuba diving company that Dasmond Koh is a partner in.

Now this certainly gives us the urge to want to explore the oceans.

Lawrence Wong spent his birthday working for 18 hours

While most of us would probably prefer to take leave on our birthday, the hard-working and super busy actor “celebrated” turning 31 with an 18-hour work day on the set of his new drama in Wuxi, China (at least he still got cakes, flowers, and presents).

His schedule is so packed that he could only find time to post photos and his thoughts on Instagram the next day (while getting his makeup done), thanking everyone for their well-wishes, gifts, ad spaces in malls and train stations, and fans’ donations to animal welfare organisations (which he said makes him the happiest).

Lawrence also took the opportunity to tease an exciting upcoming plan to “give back to the arts community”, which he said is “currently undergoing execution”. We certainly can’t wait to hear more about that.

Michelle Yeoh got a birthday wish from Queen Cersei

We would be over the moon if we could look half as fit and fab as the actress by the time we turn 57 (or at any age, to be honest). A hilarious video greeting from Lena Headey (a.k.a. Queen Cersei on Game of Thrones), whom Michelle worked with for upcoming film Gunpowder Milkshake, wouldn’t hurt too.

You mean it’s already been a year since Chix Hot Chicken started lighting its customers’ mouths on fire with their signature Nashville Hot Chicken?

On Monday (Aug 5), the singer dedicated a long list of thank you’s to the people who helped make his first business venture and its first birthday celebration a success, including his wife Sheena Akbal, the restaurant team, and even those who dared to participate in the Chix Hot Chicken Challenge (which sounds absolutely terrifying).

Congrats, Taufik! Here’s to many more fruitful years.

Yvonne Lim paid tribute on her godmother’s birthday

On Wednesday (Aug 7), the actress shared that when she was just 13, she lost her mother to cancer. Because of that, she “had to grow up quickly, learned to be independent and make decisions on my own (sic)”.

Fortunately, her godmother appeared in her life when she “needed help most”, which gave her peace of mind when she temporarily relocated her entire family from Taiwan to Singapore to film her comeback Channel 8 drama While You Were Away earlier this year.

“When I was busy, [my husband Alex Tien] had my godmother to help [with the kids], so I could relax and concentrate on my work,” she wrote. “Today is [my godmother’s] birthday, wishing her health and happiness always.”

Social media was flooded with lovey dovey posts on Wednesday (Aug 7), which was Chinese Valentine’s Day, but one of our favourite tributes came courtesy of Ah Jie, who shared this photo of herself and her husband Philip Chionh with a panda sticker over his head (that’s one way to protect his privacy).

Her caption got us chuckling too. “That day, I got drunk and dizzy, and fell asleep. When I woke up, you changed! Happy Chinese Valentine’s Day.”

These two cheeky lads, who are the sons of the singer-actress’s older sister, couldn’t help but to try and pose like their famous aunt in her advertisements at the store - and they got “shamed” in front of her 1.2 million followers as a result. “Don’t think I can’t see that you’re mimicking me!” Vivian wrote on Instagram, along with hashtags musing about how she watched them grow up, showing just how adorably close they are.
