56 AND GOING STRONG: Hats off to Jacky Cheung for proving age is just a number with his amazing physical stamina.

The 55-year-old (he turns 56 this July) effortlessly worked all corners of his four-sided stage and danced and pranced with the agility of a ballet dancer at his first Singapore show (this is also his 56th concert stop) last night. And though he was down with a “small cold,” Jacky – in his signature rich baritone voice – delivered a flawless performance.

While bantering with the 10,000-strong crowd, the Hong Kong singer-songwriter profusely apologised for not being in tip-top condition and explained he fell ill because Singapore was “hot outside but cold inside (the buildings).”

“I want to assure everyone that although it may feel like a rehearsal session – please forgive me – I’ll bring the best performance to everyone,” he said with a chuckle. “So far so good lah.”

It was in fact more than just “good” - Jacky’s concert was a feast for the eyes and ears. His self-designed four-sided stage (this is also his first time performing on such a stage in Singapore) was another visual spectacle to behold with its multiple configurations.

Read on as we share our favourite moments from his concert!

After opening the concert with a series of fast dances, including a colourful flamenco segment for ‘Very Summer,’ it was time to take things slow. A white origami boat surfaced from beneath the stage for Jacky to perform ‘Apart From Me,’ one of his many hit Mandopop ballads. He serenaded the audience while standing on the boat and circled the four-sided stage on the moving prop which was, in fact, manually controlled by a staff who was walking in its sail. As he crouched and demonstrated the secret behind the boat’s non-existent mechanics, Jacky said, “If I had made it a transparent boat you’d be laughing instead!” Now you know.

Jacky invited everyone to participate in a “little game” and promised a special present for the “cutest, prettiest people” with the best display of affection. As he crooned to ‘She Comes To Listen To My Concert,’ the camera slowly panned across the stadium and caught many unsuspecting couples by surprise. The segment was equal parts cute and sweet but it was Jacky’s gift to the couple that made it the icing on the cake.

He presented one of the couples with a picture of their kiss-cam moment and gave them a piece of marital advice. As someone who has been married for 21 years, he said, “I know there are bound to be arguments in every relationship and I hope this picture will remind you of your love for each other in those times.” Aww…

Jacky transported everyone to a magical dimension with the adroit use of LED lights, lasers and lightbulbs, during his performance of ‘Unknowingly.’ The stage was filled with flickering and dancing lights in a myriad of colours – red, blue, green and yellow, like glowing fireflies on a mid-summer’s night.

The beautiful light display continued when he performed ‘Spring Wind Autumn Rain’ and ‘Your Name My Surname’ and the stage transformed into a mini cathedral with the help of the stage’s LED screens. In case you didn’t know, Jacky’s concert is said to feature the most number of LED lights used (as long as 2,500 to 3,000 square metres) as his four-sided stage is covered entirely with it.

Medley of his best hits

For a man with 57 music albums and “30 years’ worth” of songs under his belt, it’d take Jacky more than one night to perform everything. So what he did was string together the best of his best hits (‘To Have You On This Road,’ ‘Goodbye Kiss,’ ‘Heart Pierced With a Knife’) in a medley which, naturally, morphed into a giant sing-along. After all, what's a Jacky Cheung concert without a mass karaoke session of his best hits?

PS: Jacky is flanked by Carrie Yeo and Chen Diya on his right. The two local singers are Jacky's "backing vocalists" for this tour and will be on the road with him for two years. Another local face not seen in this picture is Goh Kheng Long, the music director of NDP 2011 and Chingay 2015, who is also the music director for this tour. This is Jacky's second collaboration with the the arranger, composer and producer after working together in Music Odyssey in 2002
