THEN AND NOW: Watching a 5566 concert in 2003 vs. 2019

Much has changed in the 16 years in between

THEN AND NOW: Watching a 5566 concert in 2003 vs. 2019

When news of Taiwanese group 5566 returning to Singapore was announced earlier this year, a tiny part of me was very, very excited.

Let me explain: back in 2003, I was convinced that I needed to attend 5566’s first concert in Singapore. I watched the hugely popular idol drama My MVP Valentine in 2002, which caused the members’ – in particular Tony Sun, who played the second male lead – popularity to skyrocket.

At that time, I brought packed lunches from home so that I could save my daily allowance. Two months of scrimping (although I admit that I gave in to buying bubble tea a few times) later, I finally had enough to pay for my concert ticket – and when I found out that I was allocated an aisle seat in the sixth row, nothing could shut me up about how excited I was.

Fast forward to the day of the concert, and that happiness was dampened by the fact that Rio Peng aggravated his back injury, which was sustained during a variety show filming, just before the show. He was unable to dance and could only stand on stage with them for a few songs.

Things were very different in the present day, 16 years later.

For one, I didn’t have to scrimp and save for two months to get my concert ticket – it was a review ticket kindly provided by concert promoters Live Nation Singapore. The concert poster, which previously had five people on it, now only had three members.

Former member Sam Wang is said to be on bad terms with the other members and hasn’t been spotted with 5566 for a long time, while Rio, who left the group shortly after the Singapore concert back in 2003 to focus on his rehabilitation, was a special guest who would only join 5566 on stage towards the end of the concert.

I also didn’t have an aisle seat in the sixth row, but I did have my younger brother, who was forced to listen to 5566 songs while he was growing up, with me as we enthusiastically sang along to most of the songs – yes, even when ‘Wo Nan Guo’ was performed for the third time during the show.

The 5566 members have also changed quite a bit since their last show here. Instead of the perfect idol image that I remember them for, they poked fun at each other non-stop.

Case in point: youngest member Jason Hsu dragged out an oxygen canister after Zax Wang’s attempt at dancing to BTS’s ‘Idol’, while Zax, Jason and Tony busted a gut laughing at Rio’s attempt to dance to ‘Wu Suo Wei’, which is the only 5566 song that he knows the choreography to.

That wasn’t to say that the entire night was made up of just savagery, however, as the members repeatedly thanked those in the audience for making it to the show.

Photo slideshows of the members with their fans from way back were featured during some of the segments, as they shared that they trawled social media sites to find all the #throwback pics.

“Did you see any of your photos on screen?” Zax asked at one point, which was met with a resounding ‘no’ from the crowd. “Sorry, I might have missed out on yours because if I put all the photos in, the video might still be playing three hours later, and we don’t have time for that!”

Before the night ended, the group shared that they do not know if there will be another opportunity for them to perform in Singapore again.

“Every time we come on stage, we tell ourselves that this could be our very last show,” they shared. “It’s not just the fans that we have to consider; we also have to find someone who is willing to stage our concert. We don’t know when our last time performing together will be, which is why every time we get to see all of you like this is very precious to us.”
