Yeo Yann Yann took home the coveted Best Actress prize at Saturday’s (Nov 23) Golden Horse Awards in Taipei for her role in local director Anthony Chen’s Wet Season. This is her second Golden Horse trophy (she previously won Best Supporting Actress for Ilo Ilo in 2013).

During her acceptance speech, the Singapore-based Malaysian actress paid tribute to her mentor, late playwright and theatre director Kuo Pao Kun. “Whenever I wanted to give up, he would tell me, ‘Do you think I’ve never felt the same way? Every night I feel like giving up, but the next morning, I make a decision to keep going,’” she said. “I know he is looking down at me from above, and I want to say to him, I will keep going. Thank you.”

In an interview with the media at an afterparty, Yann Yann admitted that all she wants to do right now is dance and have a good sleep. “I need to calm myself down,” she explained, adding that she hasn’t really thought about how she wants to celebrate her victory.

When asked if she had heard from her family, the 42-year-old said that her husband, Hong Kong action director Ma Yuk Sing, had already congratulated her. Her seven-year-old daughter Vera, on the other hand, had probably already gone to bed. “I will call her in the morning. I’m looking forward to hearing what she has to say to me,” she smiled.

Speaking of her daughter, Yann Yann recalled an incident that took place while she was filming Wet Season. Once, a producer who was supposed to help look after Vera was so busy that they forgot to pick her up from school. “I got a call in the middle of filming from a teacher and I was shocked! Making a movie will make your family fall apart,” she joked.
