EXO brought its current concert tour EXO PLANET #2 – The EXO’luXion to Beijing last weekend, where the popular boy group was involved in a controversy once again. Numerous instances where a red laser pointer beam was seen directed onto the stage were spotted by both concert-goers and netizens alike, which has angered many fans.
Numerous photos uploaded on social networking sites such as Twitter and Weibo by other concert-goers have shown the strong beams being shone onto the members and in some cases, into the members’ eyes. Other photos have also shown an unidentified audience member in the seated section of the concert holding the laser pointer during various parts of the show.
While nobody has claimed responsibility for the dangerous acts, as of press time, the incidents have caught the attention of the international community of fans, many of whom are calling for fans of the group to pay more attention to safety when attending concerts.
Concerts featuring Korean acts typically have bag checks at the door in which prohibited items, including overly large items, cameras, food and dangerous items will be removed. In China, however, such bag checks are usually skipped.
Laser pointers, which are lightweight and portable, can cause disturbances to vision or distract those they are directed at and pose a risk to the members who are performing on stage. Despite the anger, fans have expressed their relief that no injuries occurred due to this isolated incident.
EXO is slated to perform at the SMTOWN LIVE WORLD TOUR IV in JAPAN Special Edition in Osaka this weekend with the rest of their label mates.
