What do Park Min Young and Kim Jong Kook have in common? Apart from being huge Hallyu stars, this pair have hardly crossed paths - that is, until Singapore. They graced the Samsung X Viu Press Conference to commemorate the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, which was held at the Gardens by the Bay yesterday (August 10).

Park Min Young took the stage first, talking about her role in hit drama What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim. The 32-year-old, who previously worked on projects such as Queen for Seven Days and Sungkyunkwan Scandal, took on her very first romcom with this drama, and was also embroiled in dating rumours with her co-star, Park Seo Joon. Yikes.

A previously submitted question about her thoughts on workplace romances (after all, her character Kim Mi So fell in love with Park Seo Joon’s character, Lee Young Joon, who is also her boss) was initially approved but was eventually crossed out.

It was only after a brief moment that we realised the implications her answer (regardless of what she said) might have, given the magnifying glass that is constantly hovering over celebrities.

We digress. Park Min Young talked more about her most memorable scene in the drama (it was a kissing scene that didn’t quite happen), along with details about the group chat the cast members are still in.

After the actress chatted with the media for over half an hour, it was Kim Jong Kook’s turn to take the stage, and he talked about the real reason for his frequent visits to Los Angeles (no, he doesn’t have a secret child there) and how singing remains his first love and something that he wants to work on this year.

For all that and more, read on for the full report.

Kim Jong Kook’s praise for BTS

These days, you’ll be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t know who BTS is - the septet have been breaking records all over the world and are poised to launch what could be one of the biggest world tours we’ve seen in K-Pop and beyond.

Before they catapulted to this unprecedented level of fame (seriously, how many people can say that John Cena volunteered to be their bodyguard?), they made a guest appearance on popular variety series Running Man back in 2016, and Kim Jong Kook was so impressed with them he couldn’t help but gush.

“You know BTS, right? These days, they’re really popular, and there’s really nothing that they can’t do,” he chuckled. “They were guest stars on Running Man in the past, and I was really impressed because they’re really kind and good kids (…) I would love to work with them on some music.”

While newer fans of the kimchi craze might only know Kim Jong Kook for his variety skills, the 42-year-old actually debuted as a singer, and singing remains his first love. “It’s something that’s very important to me, which is why I want to release an album. I hope that it’ll be in time for this year,” he smiled.

There have been numerous reports of Kim Jong Kook wanting to tie the knot, and the star addressed these in Singapore as well. “It’s true that I really want to get married,” he laughed. “But I can’t just yet. Of course, I’d want to go public if I’m in a relationship, but I have to think about the other party as well. She might not want it, so it all depends.”

As for his frequent visits to LA, which were mentioned on a recent episode of Running Man, he also took the opportunity to clarify once again that no, he doesn’t have a secret child in the golden state. He explained, “My mum likes it a lot, and I have a lot of friends there. That’s why I go there when I have time. My mum really likes Singapore too, but this time, my trip here is too short, that’s why she didn’t come.”

Park Min Young’s most memorable non-kiss scene

As we mentioned earlier in this report, there seemed to be an unspoken rule that questions about Park Seo Joon - or dating - wouldn’t be entertained at the media conference, but it didn’t matter as there was plenty to talk about.

For the actress, taking on a romcom role for the first time came with its fair share of challenges, but has sparked her desire to try her hand at more in the future. “I think female characters that are both funny and witty at the same time would be a fun role to play,” she smiled, adding that while she has yet to decide on her next acting project, that she will “make a decision soon” and confirm her next drama - or movie.

The most memorable scene in What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim, however, is one that we didn’t expect. “At the end of the sixth.. No, fifth episode, my character was supposed to have her first kiss and was expecting it to happen, but it ended up in failure.. Because of his childhood trauma, Young Joon couldn’t kiss Secretary Kim,” she said.

Park Min Young continued with a grin, “I was sitting on a chair, and even puckered my lips in preparation for the kiss but in the end the entire chair was pushed away. Secretary Kim, who always maintained a poker face, had an interesting expression on her face at that time and it was really funny. Even when I think of it now, it’s still funny.”

Declaring outdoor scenes as her nemesis in this drama (to be fair, it’s uncharacteristically hot in South Korea these days), she added that the professionalism of the entire cast allowed them to shoot their scenes efficiently.

For those who are already missing the drama, fear not as we’re set to receive more updates from the cast and crew really soon. The drama, which raked in the ratings, saw its producers rewarding the cast with a vacation to Thailand.

Park Min Young revealed that with the vacation happening really soon, the group chat room that the cast created is set to come alive once again. If that means that we’ll be getting a ton of social media updates from all of them, we’re looking forward to it too.
