Li Nanxing is no stranger to action, especially after starring in C.L.I.F. 2, 3 and 4. Imagine our surprise when we spoke to him during the imaging session of upcoming Channel 8 drama My Teacher is a Thug (previously known as Nanny Hero), where he confessed that he will be taking on a role that we’ve never seen him in before.

“My role in the show is that of a martial arts teacher to little kids, and in order to be in character I’ll be going for a number of martial arts classes so that I’ll be able to have the right posture and moves,” the 52-year-old shared.

“I’ll also have quite a number of action scenes, and I’ll be doing all of them myself (…) I also have a bit of fat to lose as I need to be really toned to look the part.”

On a blistering Saturday morning – the second day of filming – Nanxing shot his first series of action scenes, during which he had to fight off two, and then five, gangsters and was hooked up to a wire rig for a car accident scene. He also didn't use a stunt double a freefall scene, where he had to fling himself onto a padded surface multiple times for the perfect take.

How did Nanxing fare on his first action scenes?

While the day had just begun (it was just past 9am), Nanxing chuckled wryly as he commented that “it gets harder as the years pass me by.” Filming was even paused for a short while as the crew helped him massage his hand, which was bruised during one of the fight scenes, but the actor took all of it in stride and completed all the scenes like the veteran he is.

Keeping the atmosphere on-set lively despite his tiredness, Nanxing uttered in mock despair that he “buay tahan (couldn’t keep up) when I had to deal with two (gangsters), but now I have five? Aiyo!” Hiding himself with a black cloth and chuckling that he wouldn’t have to film if the crew couldn’t find him, he snapped back into his character immediately when the director called for rehearsals for the next scene to start.

Speaking to him through his manager after filming ended, there were no complaints about how tough filming was from Nanxing – instead, he merely confessed that he “ached all over” but added that there would be even more exciting action scenes ahead, asking viewers to stay tuned to the series when it airs later this year.

Teaming up with Nanxing as the other teacher in the special arts school is Bonnie Loo, whose character is in charge of teaching the children how to be stage-ready. Speaking to Toggle in an interview shortly after her return from Beijing, Bonnie confessed that while she’s excited about her first leading role, she also has a lot to work on before filming begins this week.

“I was speaking to the director just now and he pointed out that there’s a lot of body language that I’ll have to control when I’m filming. I’m naturally more hyper in nature so I have a lot of small movements that aren’t suitable for my character, who is supposed to be more mature than the ‘little girl’ roles that you’ve seen me in in the past,” she explained.

As someone who has little interaction with children, Bonnie also expressed that she is concerned about working with kids aged 3 to 7 for the drama. “I think the last time I played with kids that young was when my sister was much younger (seven years ago),” she shared with a smile. “It can be a little hard when you’re trying to communicate with them or understand them, but I think I’ll just need a little time before they warm up to me.”

Bonnie on her bid for Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes

With the Star Awards around the corner, we also took the opportunity to catch up with Bonnie on her quest to receive her first Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes gong this year. This also being the first time she is being nominated for the award, she is understandably nervous about the competition.

“When I stepped off the plane, one of the first few messages I received was from my manager congratulating me on being among the eight who are in the lead for the award at The Road to Star Awards 2017: Show 2,” Bonnie shared.

“I’ll probably call in about 50 times a day for myself,” she added. When we shared our surprise at the amount of money that will cost her (it totals to S$40 a day if she makes 50 calls, which adds up to about S$480 in total), she chuckled that this amount is “really nothing compared to what my friends do for the artistes they like – the bare minimum is 100 calls a day, so you can only imagine how many calls those who are really supportive can make.”

"I think working with children is really challenging," he confessed. "They're unpredictable in the sense that I can't really tell what they're thinking, so I hope we'll be able to work with them and complete our scenes well!"

"When we first met, he was quite shy - it's not that he doesn't like me, but they probably feel strange having to act so close to someone that they just met," she explained.
