Things have certainly been looking up for local singer-actor, Bonnie Loo, ever since she won the Campus SuperStar singing competition in 2013, making her the first female contestant to win since its launch in 2006.

Since then, she has had a very busy career, not only focusing on singing but also expanding her career to include acting as well. She has appeared in a couple of local dramas such as C.L.I.F.3, My Teacher is a Thug, and most recently, in Life Less Ordinary.

However, Bonnie has not forgotten her roots and still remembers that singing was what made her successful today. To show her appreciation to the fans that have been supporting her since day 1, she held her first ever live music showcase on Saturday (Dec 9), to sing a few songs for them.

Despite initially wanting it to be a small intimate gathering, she underestimated the crowd as she arrived to a fully packed venue at the MM2 talent hub in SOTA, with some fans even having to watch from outside. Notable faces and drama co-stars such as Desmond Tan, Huang Biren and Nick Teo were also present amongst the crowd.

The singer then hyped the crowd up, by performing songs like ‘Remember’ and the theme song, ‘Unknown’, from her 2015 debut show, Tiger Mum.

Fans certainly got more than what they came for when Bonnie surprised them mid-way with not one, but two local guests to appear on stage with her to sing a duet together.

Local singer-actor Desmond Ng was the first to make his appearance, drawing lots of cheers from fans, with some even screaming that they had good chemistry. Despite the singers knowing each other briefly in the industry at first, the pair only officially met when they played lovers in the 2016 drama, Hero.

She revealed that they have been good friends since then due to their similar interests and hobbies. Judging by how professionally they sang their medley of ‘The Passing Traveller’ and ‘The City’s Moonlight,’ one would have thought that they practiced a lot, but in reality, the singer revealed that they only had one rehearsal and called it good to go.

“We had to choose the right song properly that fit both of our voices, and we could not do anything else like dancing so we ultimately decided to sing the theme song of our drama and combined it into a medley,” Bonnie shared in an interview with Toggle after the showcase.

Fans then had a good laugh when she announced that they were not the only ones surprised, as it seemed her next guest, local actor Jeremy Chan was just as shocked when she said that they would be singing together.

The 23-year-old singer shared that she had always seen Jeremy as a good mentor and a big brother, but due to their respective busy schedules, they had not had the chance to meet since the filming for their drama, My Teacher is a Thug, commenced. Therefore, she decided to invite him to this showcase.

“I was not sure if he would even come due to his hectic schedule so I did not even text or tell him that he would be singing with me. Where’s the fun in that if he knew?” she joked.

Bonnie ultimately made the decision to invite him to sing ‘DoReMi’ with her (it was initially performed as a duet with Jeremy) after deciding that it was “weird” singing it solo, drawing applause from the crowd.

She ended off the one hour session by singing the full version of ‘Meng Meng De’, the unreleased theme song for the drama 118 II before coming out for and giving an encore, singing a last song, ‘Love is like Tides’.

Ever the professional, Bonnie gave it her all at the performance despite having been unwell for the past few days. She admitted that she hardly takes care of herself due to her hectic lifestyle of juggling acting, singing and charity performances. Despite barely sleeping the past week (she added that she only slept at 5am the previous night), she did not wish to disappoint her fans as “not satisfying the crowd is one of my biggest fears.”

She added that despite being slightly regretful of not being able to have all fans in the actual venue when she was singing, all her goals, career-wise, have been achieved for the year. She also said that holding the showcase was the last of her wishes for 2017 and that she was very happy and grateful at the turnout.

Bonnie carried on and said that her next target is have her own solo concert which would hopefully be held in a more formal and bigger location, so that all her fans can enjoy her music. She was looking forward to this the most as a concert will mark her first solo show, as she had only sang for drama theme songs previously.

To prepare for that, Bonnie has begun writing her own songs and also revealed her plans to represent Singapore in more singing competitions next year.

Bonnie’s dreams have not stopped there though - she also wants to star in a movie, regardless of it being a local or foreign production. With all these big dreams in mind, this 23-year-old up and coming star is definitely someone to look forward to.
