Celebrity fall outs and make ups

The conflict between Hong Hui Fang and Pan Ling Ling has reached a standstill for now – both sides have refrained from further commenting about their friendship or chances of a reconciliation.

Hui Fang, who previously renounced their friendship with a 1000-word message to their common friends, last said ‘nothing is impossible, we’ll see!’ when asked if she’d forgive her former pal; Ling Ling, on the other hand, simply kept it short and simple with a ‘I’ll always respect Hui Fang as a veteran.’

So what does this mean?

Things between the two veteran actresses are decidedly up in the air for now. Will they eventually reach a resolution and forgive and forget?. It might take a decade or two—or never—for the tension and ice to thaw. No one knows for sure, but two things we learned from showbiz is time heals all wounds and never say never.

These former celeb BFFs are prime examples of what the future holds for Hui Fang and Ling Ling. Read on for more.

Jacky Wu and Jay Chou

Their feud lasted for as long as… a decade.

It all started in… 2002 when Jacky sold off his record label, Alfa Music, to tide over his financial difficulties. Jay was still contracted to Jacky’s label and not too pleased to learn about the business decision. The rift between them widened when Jacky was reported to have ratted about his disciple’s past relationship with Jolin Tsai to the media when he was dating Patty Hou. They have never made any public appearances together since, plus Jacky was snubbed and did not get invited to any of Jay’s three wedding ceremonies despite being his mentor in the industry.

They buried the hatchet… in 2018. Jay unexpectedly posted a picture of Jacky rehearsing for his upcoming concert with his bandmates and wished him success in the solo gig, in what is seen today as Jay’s way of extending an olive branch to his mentor. The multi-hyphenate even sent a flower bouquet to the venue on the day of the concert with a card that read: ‘I’ll never forget my roots, and our bond will never change.’

Hong Hui Fang and Chen Xiuhuan (or Sherry Tan)

Their feud lasted for as long as… a decade.

It all started in… the early noughties when the two actresses had a misunderstanding because of something that someone else had said. They stopped talking to each other and Xiu Huan even ignored Hui Fang when the latter went to her place to personally apologise for it.

They buried the hatchet… with the help of Zoe Tay when she invited them both to the full moon party of her son. Xiu Huan, who couldn’t make it to the party, rang up Hui Fang to help pass a gift to Zoe on her behalf. They gradually started speaking to each other again and their friendship is as solid as gold right now. Said Xiu Huan, in a previous interview with Toggle about her fight with Hui Fang, “If not for that misunderstanding, our relationship wouldn’t be as good. Now, no one can come between [us] or even affect our friendship.”

Jackie Chan and Anita Yuen

Their feud lasted for as long as… 22 years.

It all started in… 1995 when Anita was casted as Jackie’s co-star in Hong Kong racing movie Thunderbolt. The action superstar was unhappy with Anita, who was still a rookie then, for her tardy ways, bad attitude and rude mannerisms on set. It got so bad that he even requested for a change of actress and lodged a formal complaint against Anita, causing her to be blacklisted by the film industry.

They buried the hatchet in… 2017 when Anita took the initiative to participate in a dinner arranged by Eric Tsang after hearing that Jackie would be present too. On top of personally clearing the air with him, she had also admitted to her poor behaviour to Jackie and the latter, who also prepped gifts of Thunderbolt’s film reels for her when she RSVP-ed for the dinner, decided to let bygones be bygones.

Carina Lau and Rosamund Kwan

Their feud lasted for as long as… 3 years

It all started in… 2015 when Rosamund was unhappy to learn that Carina went on a hike with her billionaire ex-husband Pierre Chen, a couple of days after they filed for divorce. Rosamund called Carina “insensitive” while Carina argued that she was not informed about the divorce beforehand. When both actresses, who have been friends for more than 20 years, were spotted attending the same wedding party in 2016, Rosamund replied in spite when asked if she felt awkward seeing Carina at the same event: “It should be more awkward for her.”

They buried the hatchet in… March this year when Rosamund let on that she was going to attend an event together with Carina and shared that they grabbed drinks after (“We even had drinks, let’s not keep circling this topic for the next 20 years,” she said). Rosamund also waved off their little conflict as something that was not as serious as made out to be.

Dee Hsu and Mickey Huang

Their feud lasted for as long as… 15 years.

It all started in… 2000 after Mickey reportedly dumped Dee for Bowie Tsang. His betrayal became talk of the town when Dee and her sister, Barbie Hsu, openly shamed him for it on their variety show, causing Mickey to fall into depression after their breakup. The exes steered clear of each other and were never seen at the same work events after their relationship ended on an acrimonious note.

They buried the hatchet in… 2015 after the production team of Here Comes Kangxi sought Dee’s permission to invite Mickey on her show to promote Selina Jen’s new album. Tears were shed, apologies were exchanged and the two exes hugged and made up on the programme. Though, truth be told, the pair warmed up to each other after Mickey promoted Dee’s album on his radio show and she had followed up by sending him a ‘friend request’ on Facebook.

Their feud lasted for as long as… a few years.

It all started when… Ou Han Sheng (or Ou Di) was serving the nation. He had entrusted his girlfriend Makiyo to his buddy, Show’s care but by the end of his compulsory military service, Makiyo broke up with him and reportedly starting going out with Show. The friendship between the two guys took a turn for the worse as it was alleged that Makiyo had two-timed the both of them and Show had come between the couple.

They buried the hatchet in… 2012, after Show guested on a programme that was hosted by Ou Di, making it their first televised appearance together after they fell out. Both of them have clearly moved on from the incident – Ou Di is now happily settled down with kids and Show is said to be getting hitched to his longtime blogger girlfriend Grace Chow.

Show Luo and Jay Chou

Their feud lasted for as long as… 10 years.

It all started in… 2005 when Show sided with Jolin after Jay two-timed her and initiated a breakup. Their friendship hit a rocky patch after it was reported that Show had spread rumours about Jay and Taiwanese singer Hebe Tien. For all the years that they remained out of contact, Jay once expressed his extreme disappointment with a friend who he had “not contacted” for a long time.

They buried the hatchet in… 2016 at the Hitto Music Award when they took a picture together backstage. Taiwanese media had hailed it an “ice breaker” moment between the two former BFFs and Show, who had shared the picture on social media later, wrote, “Us. [We have] all grown up!” hinting that their unhappiness with each other was all water under the bridge.
