Though it may not seem like it now, there was a time when bosom buddies and travel pals, local actresses Chen Xiu Huan and Hong Hui Fang were at loggerheads with each other - for ten long years.

During an interview with Toggle at the lensing ceremony of upcoming Channel 8 drama, Fifty And Fabulous, Chen Xiu Huan let this surprising story out, musing that everything happens for a reason.

The lensing ceremony, which was attended by cast members Chew Chor Meng, Chen Xiu Huan, Denise Camillia Tan, Jason Oh, Hong Ling, Edwin Goh, Zheng Geping, Aileen Tan, Jin Yin Ji, Lin Mei Jiao, James Seah and Kate Pang, saw multiple cast members joking about the Mandarin name of the drama, which combines the age 50, as well as the Chinese name for martial arts experts (wu ling gao shou).

“I was so excited [when I was first approached for this drama] because I thought that Mediacorp was finally filming a [period] martial arts drama,” Aileen Tan laughed, adding that her one regret is that she has yet to act in such a drama throughout her 29 year career as an actress.

Jokes and puns aside, the name of the drama, as well as its focus on the lives and dreams of those who have hit the age of 50, got us wondering – how did our veteran artistes spend their 50th birthday, and do they have any dreams that they have yet to achieve?

Chen Xiu Huan once had a decade-long feud with Hong Hui Fang

The actress revealed in her interview that she once had a decade-long feud with fellow actress and best pal, Hong Hui Fang, to our surprise.

“Hong Hui Fang is like my older sister, whenever we’re together, we’ll never run out of topics to talk about. She takes very good care of me, in fact, the first time I came to the studio for my imaging session, she made sure to bring me about, so that I’d know things like where the rest area is,” Xiu Huan revealed.

Later, when asked if there was anything she ever regretted, the actress thought for a minute before saying, “I believe that everything happens for a reason, and that it’ll help us to grow [as a person], and learn to treasure what we have more.”

“For example,” she continued, “I had a misunderstanding with Hong Hui Fang because of something that someone else said once, and I stopped talking to her for over 10 years because of that. She even came down to my house, and waited for me, and even cried, but I never went to meet her.”

Luckily, the two actresses eventually made up thanks to the unknowing help of fellow actress, Zoe Tay.

“Zoe had invited me to the full month party of her son, but I couldn’t make it. So I called Hui Fang up and asked her if she could give Zoe a gift on my behalf at the party. After that we gradually started talking to each other again,” she recalled.

“At first, I felt like I had wasted 10 years, due to our long feud,” Xiu Huan said, adding that they had both forgotten the exact reason why they were fighting in the first place. “But, if not for that misunderstanding, our relationship wouldn’t be as good. Now, no one can come between, or even affect our friendship.”

Are there any actors over the age of 50 whom you admire?
Donnie Yen. He has worked hard for so many years, and finally, he got the role of Ip Man after many years of hard work. No one can really know how many injuries he suffered while on the job; I’ve heard that he has to have a masseuse follow him around on set because of these injuries.

Is there a period in your life that you’ll like to have a video record of?
It should be the process of me training my body. I had a lot of determination then, and it was quite lonely, because, no one can help you but yourself. Everyone will see your success, but because they have not walked on that road with you, [they wouldn’t know your pain]. It’s a lonely and hard road. When I was training my body, I was already over 45 [years old], and the rate of success is not high at all [for that age]. It’s a road that you cannot give up on as well, because once you give up you’ll fail.

Do you have any goals that you’ve set for yourself in the future?
I’m 53 now, and I hope to be able to maintain a healthy body and a healthy mind, to be both physically and mentally healthy. Hopefully, in the near future, I want to be able to make my own movie.

A lot of moviemakers wish to elevate the status of the local and Malaysian movie scene, and find our own identity, [and that’s something that I agree with].

How did you celebrate your 50th birthday?
When I was 48 or 49, I told myself that I wanted to do a big party, and invite all the artistes, because I rarely do such large parties. But on that year, my dad’s condition was not good and it looked like he might not live the year, so my 50th birthday was spent with my father, beside him, with my family.

When I was 51, my very good buddy rented out an entire pub, and tricked me into coming. I was so confused because it was in the afternoon to boot, but when I went in they all surprised me, with all sorts of streamers and balloons and I was so happy.

Are there any actors over the age of 50 whom you admire?
Chen Shu Cheng da ge. He has always encouraged me and given me advice, from the time I took part in Star Search up till now; he’s really someone that I admire a lot. As for foreign actors, there’s really too many to name, but, I especially admire [Hong Kong actor] Tony Leung. He’s really a very good actor, who’s able to draw people fully into his character and the production that he’s in.

Is there a period in your life that you’ll like to have a video record of?
Personally, I think that the period after I fell ill would be good. It’ll be able to show how I met life’s challenges and overcame it, and how I eventually drew strength from the experience, and went on to encourage other people.

Is there a period in your life that you’ll like to have a video record of?
I want to record down the days when I lived together with my mother and mother-in-law. Even when my mother got older, and suffered from dementia, she would never forget me. Even though she might forget her son’s face, once she saw me and my husband’s face, she’ll always remember us, and it’s something that’s unforgettable for me.

Is there anything that you regret not having achieved in your life?
I regret not spending more time with my mother. I really regret not bringing her overseas. After she left Korea, I forgot to bring her back once again for a visit. Even after she started becoming senile, she’ll still think about going back, to Korea, to China. I hope for all the other sons and daughters out there, to quickly bring their parents out to places that they want to go to at least once, especially if they’re old. If not, it’ll be too late [to do so], just like my mother and I.

How did you celebrate your 50th birthday?
I just celebrated my 50th the year before, in Hong Kong. It was extra unforgettable, because my husband had asked me what I wanted for my birthday that year, and I said that I wanted to celebrate it overseas with my friends, and he really bought me a plane ticket to Hong Kong.

While we were there, I had the chance to visit my friend’s dad, and a few days after I returned home, he unexpectedly passed away. Through that experience, I really learnt the importance of living in the present, and cherishing each and every moment that I have.

Is there a period in your life that you’ll like to have a video record of?
I’d like to go back to my childhood days, because those were the days that were the most carefree. If not, I hope to be able to record down my life after retirement, because I’d probably have no stress at all, be it from work or other things. In fact, I always tease my daughter by telling her that I’ll be retiring soon.

Is there a period in your life that you’ll like to have a video record of?
All my artworks have bits and pieces of my life experiences put into them. They are all part of my life, and when I draw each and every one of them, I always feel that there’s still more room for improvement.

Is there anything that you regret not having achieved in your life?
No, I have no regrets in life; I never live in the shadows of my regrets. I only collect the experiences, feelings and thoughts of my past experiences and put them in my art pieces.

Do you have any goals that you’ve set for yourself in the future?
I hope to be able to produce better works, be it in acting or art.
