After six months, Rui En is finally returning to TV screens in upcoming Channel 8 drama Have A Little Faith (formerly known as Trust Me, Trust Me Not), which premieres later this year.

Last April, the actress made headlines for causing a minor vehicle accident at her apartment’s parking lot, and was fined $700 for careless driving in July. When filming for her last project C.L.I.F. 4 wrapped in June, she embarked on a long absence away from film sets and the spotlight.

At the imaging session for her comeback programme this morning, Rui En told Toggle, “I was totally overworked before, to the point of burnout, so I think this break has been absolutely essential for my growth.”

So what did she do during her time off? “You would get bored if I told you what I did every day!” said the self-proclaimed homebody with a chuckle. “I mostly just exercised and watched movies. [What did you watch?] There are too many to name! But a recent one was Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”

More importantly, the 35-year-old was able to pick herself up after the media storm and public scrutiny she was subject to after her car saga.

“A lot of incidences have occurred over the past year, even right up to recently, and I can only say that these things could have defeated me and made me fall flat on my face, but I chose not to (let them); I chose to fight, and I can only say that I hope this drama lets you see a more mature, steady and worldly Rui En.”

She continued, “If this was a test (from God) that was meant to make me grow up, then I will go through that.”

When Toggle tried to probe for more details about Rui En’s reported visit to New Zealand, where her father is based, we were gently reminded by her manager to keep our questions related to the drama.

In Have A Little Faith, Rui En takes on the role of Jiang Xiao-xi, a swindler and pickpocket who robs from the rich to give to the poor.

“I was very happy when I read the script because it’s a character I’ve never done before,” Rui En explained. “I felt it had a lot of potential to show the audience a different side of me, and it’s very rare to find a character that’s so colourful and interesting.”

While refraining from going into too much detail about Xiao-xi’s fate, Rui En revealed that she prepared for her portrayal by observing Jessica Jones, a Netflix series that centres on a former superhero-turned-private investigator. “But of course, I won’t copy it exactly,” she clarified.

The Hype Records artiste will be romantically linked with Zhang Zhen Huan, who plays fashion designer Shen Ming-ren. “I’ve worked with him many times before, and as he’s still growing as an actor, I’m looking forward to seeing a more mature Zhen Huan,” she said.

Asked if she’s worried about diving back into her intense job after such a long time away, Rui En reassured us with a smile, “Acting is like riding a bike: once you learn, you will never forget. In fact, I’m excited! After all, acting is what I love to do.”

Before the interview ended, Rui En, who turns 36 this Sunday (Jan 29), was asked to share her birthday wish. With all that has happened in 2016, her reply was not surprising: “That this year will be better than the last.”

Her loyal fanclub RBKD has already kicked off her birthday festivities on a positive note. Two days ago, the charitable bunch braved the heavy downpour to go door-to-door to deliver food rations to 300 elderly folks in celebration of her birthday. And since it happened to be her Lunar birthday on that day as well, they had a lo hei session.

Have A Little Faith debuts July 3, 9pm on Channel 8.
