Jesseca Liu popped by CHIJ Kellock on January 16 to speak to primary 5 and 6 students on the joys of learning Mandarin yesterday. She was warmly welcomed by both the students and teachers, with many of the excited pupils flocking to her to ask for autographs and selfies after her sharing session.

The actress let on that she grew up in a Cantonese-speaking environment back at home on Langkawi, but that her parents remained steadfast in speaking Mandarin to her to emphasise the importance of knowing the language. She left her hometown in 2004 and relocated to Singapore to pursue her acting career, where she shared that the biggest challenge she faced was shedding her strong accent.

During the light-hearted sharing session, the theme song to The Queen, complete with lyric subtitles, was played on-screen; afterwards, two students acted out a portion of Hero along with Jesseca, who guided them on how to read the script and express their emotions. Encouraging them throughout the session, she also teased them that “knowing how to read scripts is the first condition you’ll have to meet if you want to be an actor in future – you have to know Mandarin if you want to stand a chance!”

After the end of her session with the students, Jesseca took the time to catch up with Toggle, where she confessed that she felt a lot more relaxed after the sharing session. “I was really stressed before I came to the school because I was worried that the students wouldn’t understand or be interested in what I had to say. I feel really good after the session because they’re really enthusiastic!” she chuckled.

The 37-year-old let on that she has been concentrating on scriptwriting classes after she completed filming for Hero, and is looking to make baby steps towards working behind-the-scenes from this year. She will be graduating from her course in two months and her first script will also be ready by then. Her school will then pick three to four of the most outstanding scripts and bring the stories to life through the big screen.

“The only thing that’s left to write is the dialogue,” Jesseca shared, letting on that her story is a rom-com that is based in her hometown of Langkawi, but “doesn’t have any traces of my life story in it. My family and I have discussed my grandfather’s love story, and this was the main inspiration for my story.”

Confessing that she would love to have her script chosen to be turned into a film, she shared that it would be likely that she will also be the director and lead actress of her project. As for her leading man, she’d want to cast someone like Tony Leung, but has yet to narrow down her choices from the pool of local talent. “I’ll wait for the story to be completed before I consider the casting,” she laughed.

As she will be focusing on working behind-the-scenes this year, she let on that she will not be taking on any dramas or films in the first half of the year, but is in discussions to be in a film that will commence filming in June or July.

Given that she recently shared the screen with boyfriend Jeremy Chan in Hero, we asked if she would consider acting with him in future projects – a possibility that she confirmed that she is open to as long as the job calls for it.

With marriage rumours between her and Jeremy making the rounds last year, Jesseca previously shared that wedding bells will not be ringing anytime soon after Jeremy’s grandmother passed away in September.

Maintaining that she wants to focus on working behind-the-scenes instead of putting the spotlight on her love life, she let on that even after marriage, she “will not retire from showbiz (because) I feel that there isn’t any conflict between my personal life and being an artiste.”
