The ever-famous ‘diam la! (Hokkien for ‘Shut up la!’) prank, created by Bryan Wong and Rebecca Lim when they first filmed You Can Be An Angel Too, seems to have taken on a life of its own.

While the prank seemed to have gone into hiding for the past few months, it reared its head once the second season of the show, titled You Can Be An Angel 2 was announced. The second season sees original cast members Zoe Tay, Xiang Yun, Bryan Wong, Rebecca Lim, Zheng Geping, Xubin and Aloysius Pang reprising their respective roles, with new characters played by Thomas Ong and Carrie Wong added into the fray.

During the lensing ceremony held last month, the phrase ‘diam la!’ was repeated numerous times by the gleeful cast members as they roamed about, occasionally interrupting an interview to startle the victim of their choice.

Toggle caught up with the two creators of the prank, Bryan and Rebecca earlier last week as they prepared to film a taekwondo scene with their on-screen son, where they revealed more about the notorious prank.

Zoe and Xiang Yun got in on the fun too

The on-screen couple revealed that they’ve managed to prank almost everyone so far, save for Ah jie Zoe.

On the other hand however, Zoe has no qualms about pranking her fellow cast mates, with Bryan revealing that he has already fallen prey to her a number of times.

The 40-year-old shared that they had been filming a number of more emotional scenes which centred around his character recently, and he didn’t want to prank anyone so that he can remain in character.

However, Zoe thought otherwise. “Ah jie is crazy, this time, she’s really lost it. She has told me to diam so many times. What’s more, every time she yells diam, it’s very loud and high pitched,” he revealed.

“Once, I was filming a sad scene with her. She was crying, and I was supposed to be consoling her. I was in the middle of saying my lines, and then suddenly, she yelled in a high-pitched voice, ‘Diam la!’’”.

On the other hand, Xiang Yun was not as up for the task as Zoe. The actress had initially planned with the other cast members to have Geping as their next victim. However, she backed out at the last minute, with Bryan jokingly labelling her as “useless”.

“She said, ‘I can’t do it, he looks so emotional.’ But, all of Geping’s scene are similarly emotional,” Bryan exclaimed.

Bryan, Rebecca and Perez

Bryan and Rebecca’s co-star four-year-old Perez was last seen in the drama Life Fear Not. During filming, he was an insatiable ball of energy, with Rebecca and Bryan constantly playing around with him. At one point, the crew had to remind the cast members to let Perez rest as well, for fear that he would be tired out even before filming begun.

In one scene, Perez was supposed to kick Bryan in the stomach, only for his leg to slip and accidentally hit Bryan in his crotch.

Bryan immediately crumpled to the floor, jokingly exclaiming, “If this continues on, this might just become XYZ’s [the name of Bryan’s character in the drama] last episode!”

As this was Rebecca’s first time acting alongside a child actor, she commented, “The attention span of kids are shorter [when compared to adults], so we have to be ready at all times [to begin filming].”
