'Reach for the Skies' co-stars Hong Hui Fang and Pan Ling Ling

Channel 8 drama Reach for the Skies co-stars Pan Ling Ling and Hong Hui Fang’s friendship has been thrust into the spotlight in recent days after a Chinese paper published a series of messages of Huifang renouncing her friendship with Ling Ling. The text message was sent to their mutual friends in showbiz and elaborated about how Ling Ling had bullied Hui Fang throughout their friendship and is subjecting her kids, Calvert Tay and Tay Ying, to the same treatment now.

According to screenshots that were published online, the rift between the actresses deepened when Calvert’s personal life was brought into the picture recently. The 18-year-old, who is currently doing his National Service, is reported to be dating actress Julie Tan, 26, according to the Chinese papers.

In a phone interview with Toggle in-between takes on set, Ling Ling, who feels “terrible” for what has happened, clarified that she didn’t wish to “harm any person or family, including Julie’s parents” with her words.

“I would like to apologise to them,” said Ling Ling. “I am friends with her mother and I don’t wish for her to have any misunderstandings with me, so this is the most basic thing I can do as a friend.”

This comes after Julie’s mother, Doris Khaw, threatened to take legal action against Ling Ling and asked for a public apology for hurting her daughter with her words.

Ling Ling added that she did not expect this to blow up and declined to comment on the three issues that were raised, alleging how she had hurt Hui Fang and the actress’ family with her words. “I have no comment on this, I really don’t mean to hurt anyone, that is not my intention and I don’t mean ill.”

The actress also said that she has not been in contact with Hui Fang ever since she received her text messages and chose to keep to herself. “I didn’t expect that she’d be so angry… I didn’t reply to Hui Fang or anyone’s messages… I know what I’m doing and I hope people who know what I’m like know that I am not picking on anybody. I don’t think I need to further elaborate on this (her discord with Hui Fang) [and] let nature take its course.

“Hong Hui Fang will be my senior [in the industry] for life,” she added.

When asked if she had anything to say about what was reported about her over the past few days, Ling Ling replied: “I have not seen [the reports], I am not in the mood to read anything right now.”

The 48-year-old added that did not share any details with her husband or two sons as she did not wish to drag them into this ongoing saga. “This is a personal matter between me and Hui Fang, my husband only learned about it from the papers too.”

“I will restrain myself [and my words from now],” said Ling Ling, when asked if she intends to work on her straightforward personality.

Ling Ling and Hui Fang have been friends for more than two decades, both actresses have worked together numerous times on dramas such as It Takes Two, Poetic Justice and the currently airing Reach for the Skies, to name a few.

Catch Reach for the Skies weeknights, 7.30pm on Channel 8. Watch past episodes of Reach for the Skies on Toggle.

The first sign of discord between the two actresses, when Hui Fang posted a cryptic message on Instagram calling out a 'hypocrite'. She wrote: "When dealing with a hypocrite, don't scold her, don't expose her, let her wallow in misery and hypocrisy, then pretend you know nothing. Slowly, more people will run to you telling you how hypocritical she is."

Trouble in paradise? While filming Reach for the Skies in Bintan last week, Hui Fang posted another note saying how she will try to be more selective about her friends moving forward. "Everyone needs to be held responsible for what they have said or done, it's never wrong to stay grounded and honest. That's what life is about."

After the news about what Ling Ling allegedly wrote about Hui Fang's son and Julie Tan was released yesterday afternoon, the 26-year-old actress posted a series of snaps on Instagram, directing it to a "senior" in the industry.

"To the one who been talking shit about me, you know what? (sic) F*** you," she wrote. "Use to respect you cause you're a senior, but now sorry lost all respect. (sic)."

In excerpts of Hui Fang's text messages that surfaced, it was revealed that when news of Calvert's relationship with Julie broke, Ling Ling suggested Calvert to take precautions against STD (sexually transmitted diseases), indirectly insinuating about Julie's conduct.

July 24: Sora Ma clarifies she is not responsible for "leaking" Hong Hui Fang's messages

Before this entire saga broke out, Sora Ma wrote a column in the Chinese papers talking about a lengthy message she received from a fellow artiste (Hong Hui Fang's 1000-word message calling out Pan Ling Ling for what she has done). Plus, Sora had shared her article on social media platforms a day before the news broke out, causing some to speculate that the article penned by Sora was what started this entire controversy and the Chinese papers had picked up the news from it.

Netizens rebuked Sora for what she purportedly done and yesterday night, Sora took to Instagram to clarify that she's not someone who'd betray her friends and said it was a "coincidence" that everything happened at the same time. She added that she's not "that dumb" to make use of the column to do an expose of what has happened.
