A whopping S$4.31 million was raised by the end of last night’s (Mar 17) three-hour SPD Charity Show 2019 - an impressive S$500,000 over its S$3.8 million target.

The biennial event had a plethora of celebrities from Singapore and beyond joining hands to do their part in encouraging the public to donate generously to the charity organisation, which supports those with physical, sensory, and developmental disabilities. Many of SPD’s talented beneficiaries also participated in some of the performances, including musical showcases and even a fashion show.

“It may look easy but it took a lot of courage and practice for them to walk down this stage,” commented local actress Zoe Tay after sharing the “catwalk” with SPD client Fathimah Zohra, who rocked the runway in a wheelchair. Even Taiwanese singer Jeff Chang could not help but to burst onto the stage in awe to commend the beneficiaries for their bravery.

Jeff himself was one of the biggest highlights of the night, drawing out a large number of ardent supporters who came armed with boards and banners. The veteran crooner delighted the crowd in the MES Theatre with three hits (‘You Qing Shi Jian’, ‘Xin Yang’, and ‘Ai Ru Chao Shui’), and the number of telepoll donation calls surpassed the 80,000 mark after his set.

Joining Jeff all the way from Taiwan were Bii, who sang ‘Think of You’ and ‘Love More’ (he had his fair share of LED board-toting devotees as well), and Hong Rong Hong, whose medley of Hokkien tracks had several audience members mouthing along to the lyrics. Mickey Huang, who also hosted the show with Quan Yifong, injected some quirky and colourful fun with an energetic song-and-dance gig of his own.

In addition to gracing the show, where they performed two Cantonese ballads together, Hong Kong veteran stars Michelle Yim and Bowie Wu were shown to have paid a personal visit to SPD craftsmen. Many other local artistes had also met up with clients and their families, shining a light on their struggles and how SPD has helped them over the years.

Even the outside of the theatre was buzzing with activity as folks like Xiang Yun, Pan Ling Ling, Yeo Yann Yann, and Mark Lee’s wife Catherine Ng (plus their youngest daughter Calynn) teamed up with beneficiaries to bake and decorate cupcakes, which were later displayed on stage as a pretty, rainbow-coloured combination of confectioneries.
