The ability to give is a blessing – and the act of giving was demonstrated in yesterday’s night Thye Hua Kwan Charity Show 2018, which saw local artistes and overseas guest performers come together to raise $4.72 million to help more than 55,000 needy people under THK’s care.

Hosted by Pornsak, news anchor Zhao Wenbei and veteran Hong Kong actor and radio deejay Lawrence Cheng, the three-hour-long programme opened with a song performed by Desmond Ng, Bonnie Loo, Mei Xin and a group of children from THK EIPIC Centres as well as THK Student Care Centres.

Local songbird Joi Chua and Taiwanese singers Sky Wu and Long Qian Yu also lent their vocals for a good cause by serenading the audience with several hit songs, while comedians Marcus Chin and Sebastian Heng (better known as Broadway Beng) pitched in with an east-meets-west sing-off battle. The two men hit all the right notes and keys with their powerful vocals – one minute singing a children’s lullaby (‘Do Re Mi’) and the next crooning to tunes like ‘On the Street Where You Live’ by Nat King Cole and Chinese folk song ‘Wu Su Li Chuan Ge’.

High-energy performances sent adrenaline pumping and got callers dialling in when two brothers (from where?) pulled off gravity-defying acrobatic stunts on a six-metre-long bamboo pole and a team of six Hong Kong youngsters breakdanced to the beats of hip-hop music while rope-skipping.

Legendary Taiwanese musician Liu Chia-Chang, best known for his ballads, specially flew in to perform two songs “for free” at the charity show, and that’s not all. The singer-songwriter walked the talk and set an example to be followed by personally donating $10,000 out of his own pocket to help the needy and underprivileged.

Outside the studio, a team of 18 challengers comprising of Mediacorp artistes such as Zoe Tay, Xiang Yun, Pan Ling Ling, Kym Ng, Richie Koh and He Ying Ying, Members of Parliament Assoc Prof Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim and Baey Yam Keng, chefs, lawyers, doctors, bloggers, and THK beneficiaries undertook a challenge to complete more than 500 metres of calligraphy. They accomplished their mission with three times the targeted output (1,600 metres, to be exact) and their record-breaking attempt will be submitted to the Guinness Records.
