We showed the ‘Old is Gold’ cast how they’d look in 50 years and here’s how they reacted

Forget gender-bending selfies - now, “old person” photos are the trend. Local celebrities have taken to social media to share “elderly” pictures of themselves, complete with wrinkles, #grannyhair, and saggy skin. And they look pretty realistic, to say the least.

The instant ageing is all thanks to FaceApp’s old age filter, which uses artificial intelligence to alter one’s appearance to look decades older. Since old is the new hip, we decided to filter the cast of long-running Channel 8 drama Old is Goldwhich is set in a nursing home, to give them a glimpse into their future.

We’ve gotta admit, it wasn’t a pretty sight, but we weren’t quite expecting the actors’ scathing reactions, some harsher than the lines on their grannified faces. There were the usual comments like “so scary”, celeb comparisons, and even one self-proclaimed “pervy” grandpa. Read on for more!

What’s your first reaction when you saw the elderly version of yourself?
So smurfy. Actually, I look pretty good. Earlier, when I tried it with a different lighting on Hazelle’s [Teo] phone, I looked hideous so I asked her to delete it. (Laughs)

Do you think you “aged” well?
I think I look like my mother (veteran actress Lin Meijiao). Is that considered good? I don’t mind looking like this 50 years down the road [at 74] ‘cos I still look pretty chubby and have my signature round face, which is good when you are older ‘cos you have less wrinkles.

Does ageing scare you?
Actually, I am looking forward to ageing because people tell me I have a chubby face and baby fats. My mum said she used to have that problem when she was younger, but with age, it slowly decreases, so I am looking forward to it.

Do you think you inherited your mum’s good genes?
A lot of people say I look like my dad (former actor Huang Yiliang) and I didn’t believe it until I saw photos of him when he was younger [fishes out photographic proof]. Don’t you think so? No? Okay, I look like my mum then. (Laughs)

What’s your first reaction when you saw the elderly version of yourself?
Oh my gosh, I look so weird. This is so ugly. Is this how I will look when I am old? Maybe it’s my expression or the angle, but I think my face looks a bit out of shape.

Do you worry about how you will look when you are older?
No, because ageing is a gradual process, you won’t look like this overnight. You will only feel like you’ve aged when you see an old photo and compare it to how you look in the present. But if my eyes still look this bright and I can maintain this build when I am old, then I think that is okay.

Do you think you look young for your age?
I hope so. [Ed’s note: Hanwei turns 50 next month] I think as long as I keep my heart healthy and happy, I can [slow down the ageing process]. I noticed that the elderly who are in good spirits tend to look fuller and healthier, while those who worry a lot are more gaunt. I hope I won’t be like that. I just have to be optimistic and learn to let go of things. I am still learning to do that.

Exercise and getting sufficient Vitamin D help too, so I swim and sun tan occasionally. I don’t have age spots now but they might suddenly appear when I am in my 60s or 70s, but by then I am already so old, they won’t matter anymore.

What’s your first reaction when you saw the elderly version of yourself?
Ewww! I look like I didn’t grow old gracefully. I look like a murderer. Let me try again. This one looks like Yoda. I’m sure I can do better.

In which areas?
I don’t look happy, but if I smile too much I might look sinister. The top half of my face looks a bit Caucasian, like Harrison Ford. He is known for his half-frown half-smile, so I think I got some of that weird action going on. I would be happy if I look like this in my 80s, but not if I am in my 60s.

Do you think you look like your parents?
I think I look like my dad with my mum’s features. I am kind of weirded out.

Do you worry about how you will look when you are older?
Yes, I think a lot of people do. Working on this production, I see a lot of veteran actors. A lot of the actors, even though they are of a certain age, they are still so healthy and their minds work faster than most of us on set, so when I grow old, I want to be just like them.

Do you think you will still be acting at their age?
Yes, because acting is a never-ending journey and I wish I can experience certain roles that only people at their age can pull off.

What’s your first reaction when you saw the elderly version of yourself?
Hmmm… that’s rather unfortunate. I think the app assumes your skin sags [when you age] and when that happens, it would make your features even more prominent than before, so in this case I feel that my already big nose ended up looking even more bulbous, which is rather sad.

Apart from that?
I can imagine myself being in Old is Gold, hanging out with Chen Shu Cheng da ge and Chen Jian Bin da ge, just being one of the extras in the nursing home and eating my dinner. (Laughs) If you take a photo of some of the uncles and put our photos together, we can be friends.

Don’t you think you look kinda charming?
This reminds me of some of those veteran actors who look slightly, erm, pervy. Wear a turtleneck, add a pair of shades, and you get that Patrick Tse kind of vibe. (Laughs) Maybe the charm comes from the pervy part.

Do you think you resemble anyone?
The nose makes me look like Jackie Chan, although my eyes are a little bigger than Jackie Chan’s in this photo. If you put sunglasses on, maybe Patrick Tse will come out. (Chortles) As for family members… I look more like my grandfather and my grandfather kind of looks like this, so I guess this is quite accurate.

Would you be happy if you looked like this 50 years down the road?
(Hesitates) I would be 76 then and I am quite confident I can look better than this. We are in 2019, skincare products are next level. So many people who are in their 40s and 50s, even our local actors and actresses, they still look like they are in their early 30s. It’s insane.

What’s your first reaction when you saw the elderly version of yourself?
Am I really going to look like that when I am old? Chantalle said that I look like Li Zhen jie (Aileen Tan). If I say it, would she be offended?

I think you look a bit like Apple Hong.
A lot of people have told me that I look like Apple Hong. I didn’t know [the old age filter] is the “in” thing now, I just decided to try it two hours ago and then voila! Li Zhen jie.

Do you think you “aged” well?
No. I am sorry, Li Zhen jie! I think my eyes look like hers but there are too many fine lines which gave me a shock literally. I am 25 now, so 50 years later I will be 75, and if my hair is still this colour I would be happy.

Do you worry about how you will look when you are older?
Yes, because I am not someone who regularly takes care of my skin. But since I entered this industry, I have seen the importance of it. I used to go to sleep without fully removing my eyeliner and I think that is really detrimental. That is something that I cannot undo but I am taking steps now and I hope that as I age, things won’t be so bad.

What’s your first reaction when you saw the elderly version of yourself?
I think I look pretty cute, but also a tad frightening at the same time. I think I have seen too many of these “elderly” photos online so this outcome is within my expectations. I hope I still have such a good head of hair when I am old.

Judging by how your dad looks, do you think there’s a chance?
I’m not very positive. (Laughs) But my parents look young for their age.

Are you worried about how you will look when you are older?
Not at the moment. I just hope I will age gracefully. Wrinkles are inevitable so I will embrace them and age naturally. These days, it is common to see people who have some age to them with unnaturally tight skin. Don’t you think they look odd when their necks and other areas are wrinkly, but the skin over the face is taut?

What’s your first reaction when you saw the elderly version of yourself?
I look so old and the wrinkles are scary! I cannot accept it. I look a bit ang moh in this photo. Maybe it’s due to the colour tone.

Some people age like fine wine. Do you think that applies to you?
Some guys look better with age but not me. I don’t think I “aged” well. I was scrolling through Instagram just now and saw someone who looked like Andy Lau. I think it was Romeo Tan.

Do you think you resemble anyone?
Someone mentioned that I look like Hong Kong actress Nancy Wu. I get that quite often and I think I look like her in some of her selfies, but even more so in this photo.

Are you worried about how you will look when you are older?
Yes, of course. I am 25 now and people say you will start to age very quickly once you turn 30. But I have a baby face like my parents so I think I am still not so bad.
