What happened at The Road to Star Awards 2017: Show 3

The wait is finally over. Yesterday (April 9) marked the last of three countdown shows to this year’s Star Awards, The Road to Star Awards 2017: Show 3, bringing us one week closer to the actual show itself, where we’ll finally crown the winners of the acting categories, as well as the highly contested Top 10 Most Popular Male and Female awards.

The highlight of the night was definitely the quick-fire question and answer segment with this year’s All-Time Favourite Artiste graduates, Joanne Peh, Elvin Ng and Quan Yi Fong. The trio were tasked to answer as many questions as possible within twenty seconds, with the victor earning an extra 30 seconds for their big speech next week.

They spilled the beans about each other’s likes and dislikes – with Joanne providing the biggest laugh of the night with her answers, especially when asked to share her “favourite body part” of hubby Qi Yuwu.

Gesturing frantically to her chest area, the 33-year-old was at a loss of words, asking, “His.. this area! What’s this part called?” Hosts, Lee Teng and Kate Pang jokingly reprimanded her for trying to buy time by saying that she couldn’t hear Dennis’s questions clearly.

Speaking of which, Joanne also let on that she has actually pre-recorded her speech in advance, as she might just go in labour this week.

During an interview with Toggle before the show commence, the second time mum-to-be said she hopes to “hold the baby in” her tummy for as long as possible – at least till her husband’s back from China next week.

(Continued on the next page: find out what else went on during the show)

The viewers were also treated to a number of musical performances from the stars as well. Andie Chen, Rebecca Lim and Shaun Chen took to the stage to perform rousing renditions of the theme songs for If Only I Could and The Dream Job, which are both nominated for the Best Theme Song Award.

Next, Mediacorp’s risings stars, Bonnie Loo, Hong Ling, Michelle Wong, He Ying Ying, Denis Camillia Tan, Desmond Ng and Richie Koh teamed up for an upbeat performance.

The two awards of the night, the Best News Story and the Best Current Affairs Story were won by Ang Poh Ling with Lu Yawen, and Seoow Juin Yee respectively.

A dash of star power was also added into the mix with a special appearance from Korean actor So Ji Sub, who presented the final list of the top 40 nominees for the Top 10 Most Popular Male and Female Artistes at the end of the show in a briefcase – no less.

Dennis unwittingly got himself “arrowed” by Y =i Fong when she named him as the host she hates to work with the most.

Later, Yi Fong laughingly explained that she has to accommodate Dennis’s height whenever she works with him, and wear flat shoes instead of heels, which is why she hates working with him.

Although Romeo had to spend his 32nd birthday at work, having friends to celebrate with sure made it better. The birthday boy was presented with a surprise cake from Rebecca Lim and Ian Fang while getting ready for the show. He had a few more cakes after the show when his fanclub, The Juliet Club, surprised him with a pandan roll and an exquisite blue cake later.  Once again, happy birthday!
