Who will be the next Ah Boy to get married?
It was pouring cats and dogs when the Ah Boys to Men 4 press conference was held yesterday (November 7) at the One Farrer Hotel and Spa, but even the sound of thunder was no match for the riotous bantering from the Ah Boys.
Held a day shy of the fifth anniversary of the original movie, which premiered on November 8, 2012, both the Ah Boys and director Jack Neo shared that much has changed since their first movie five years ago, and in particular, the boys have all grown up.
The original band of brothers, Joshua Tan, Maxi Lim, Wang Weiliang, Noah Yap, Tosh Zhang and Charlie Goh, teamed up for a group interview, whereas the newer recruits, including the first Ah Girl, Apple Chan, Ryan Lian and Jaspers Lai, were led by commander-in-chief Jack Neo in the other.
It was during these group interview sessions that Weiliang told us about how he hopes his current relationship will lead to marriage (but will Maxi beat him to the altar?) and Joshua kena bao toh (was revealed to be) preparing to buy his very own condo.
Read on for more dirt they dished about each other (and themselves).

The Ah Boys are all grown up
In Ah Boys to Men 4, which revolves around the boys’ reservist days, Lobang (played by Weiliang) gets hitched and has a baby, and even Sergeant Alex Ong (played by Tosh) gets a hint at a love story, which we hope will be continued in the fifth movie.
With Charlie tying the knot in September this year, we couldn’t help but to wonder out loud which of the boys will be the next to say ‘I do’.
Weiliang was the first to declare that he is “now living in a world where it’s not just me, but the two of us,” much to our surprise. The 30-year-old let on that he has been dating someone three years younger than him for “a few months (…) and I’m dating her with the intention of getting married. After all, at this age, I can’t just mess around anymore, and I have to start planning for my future.”
He added that he hopes to tie the knot before he hits 35 and declined to reveal more about the love of his life, except that she is three years younger than him, and “has one foot in showbiz.”

What about Maxi, Joshua and Tosh?
Maxi, who is in a relationship with his non-celebrity girlfriend, Linda, also shared that he is dating her with the intention to tie the knot with her, but has no set deadline for when his big day will be.
Joshua, on the other hand, was revealed (by the other boys, no less) to have a new nickname – Condo Tan. “He’s getting ready to buy his own condo leh!” they declared when we asked about their curious choice of nickname.
This prompted us to ask if this meant that there’s good news from Joshua, and if his new property will be purchased under his name, or with a plus one. (Ahem.)
“Maybe there’ll be two names,” Joshua grinned. “Mine, and my mum’s. After all, you know I’m a mummy’s boy, right?” While there are no concrete plans just yet, he went on to share that he is intending to purchase his very own home in the near future – but not because he wants to settle down.
Meanwhile, Tosh, who sees his character being match made by his over-eager reel-life grandmother, let on that he has no updates to share just yet.
This year has been a bumper year for him, as he was recently notified that he was nominated for the Best Actor award at the Vancouver Golden Panda International Film Festival for his role in My Love, Sinema, and in this edition of the Ah Boys franchise, Sergeant Ong also takes centre stage.
“In Ah Boys 1 and 2, I didn’t even make it to the poster, but this time, I’m right smack in the middle!” he quipped. “Becoming the lead was very exciting, but at the same time, I could really feel the pressure because there’s more expectations. It used to be that I’ll have a fewer number of scenes to handle and so I could really focus on them. Now, I have a lot more scenes to work on and it’s really quite different.”

Say hello to the first Ah Girl, Apple Chan
With the testosterone overload in the first three Ah Boys movies (read: an all-male main cast), there was a definite air of interest for Ah Boys to Men 4, which sees Hong Kong-based actress Apple Chan star as the first Ah Girl.
“I knew Ryan since my secondary school days, so when I first came on set, I followed him everywhere because he was the only one I knew,” she sheepishly admitted. “I could also tell that the other guys were a bit shy around me, and I didn’t know how to talk to them, either.”
After working together for three months, however, she’s now one of the boys, and they proudly declared that they “don’t see her as a woman anymore.” Uh, we’re not sure if that’s a compliment, but sure.
“Being the only girl on set had its perks – I’d be able to get first pick of most things, and they’d go out of their way to be nice to me as well,” Apple grinned. “I watched the other Ah Boys to Men movies before working on this, so it was really great to be able to work with them in real life after watching them on screen previously.”

What’s in store for Ah Boys to Men 5?
With Jack previously confirming that there will definitely be an Ah Boys to Men 5, the director explained that his original plan of filming parts four and five together fell through because of the technicalities involved.
“For the first movie, we talked about recruit life, and with each new movie, we talk about a new part of army life,” he explained. “We can’t go back and talk about recruit life again, because that doesn’t make sense. So for the fifth movie, we have to make it even bigger and better (…) I can’t reveal more at this point except for one key word: war.”
With preparations in full swing for movie number five, Jack shared that he hopes to start filming for the fifth movie some time in 2018, and that many of the faces you see in part four will make their return in the upcoming flick as well.
As to whether the love line that we spotted in Ah Boys to Men 4 (we’re not saying who as per director Neo’s wishes) will also continue in Ah Boys to Men 5, Jack only had this to say: “Married couples in the army is something that we haven’t researched on before – whether it’s even possible for both husband and wife to be in the same unit, along with the other technicalities… We’ll definitely have to look into that, so I can’t say for sure now. But you can definitely expect to see more than just brotherhood in the fifth installment.”
We’ll look forward to that.
