SHINee’s Jonghyun passes away

SHINee’s Jonghyun has reportedly been found dead from what is believed to be a suicide attempt, Korean media reports.

According to Korean news agencies, the 27-year-old singer was found in a room in Seoul’s high-end Cheongdam-dong district at 6.30pm Korean time today (Dec 18). He was quickly rushed to the hospital, but it was too late.

His cause of death is reported to be from carbon monoxide poisoning as a result of a burning coal briquette in the room.

According to police, they were dispatched to Jonghyun’s house after his sister made a report at 4.42pm. Jonghyun was found at 6.10pm and transported to the hospital via ambulance, but he did not make it.

The police also confirmed that they found a coal briquette on a frying pan in the room, and are currently investigating the exact reason behind the apparent suicide.

Jonghyun also reportedly left a final text message to his sister which read, “It’s been really hard for me all this time, so please send me off well. Tell me that I lived a good life. This is my last greeting (to you).”

S.M. Entertainment has released a press release confirming the heartbreaking news. The company also revealed that a private funeral will be held with only friends, family and colleagues in attendance, as per Jonghyun's family's wishes, and urged the public to refrain from spreading rumours and speculations.

A separate venue has been set up for fans to pay their final respects to Jonghyun at Asan Medical Center Funeral Hall.
