5 performances to look forward to at the 2019 KKBOX Music Awards

The annual KKBOX Music Awards will happen tonight, with the who’s who of the music scene - particularly Mandopop, making their way to the Taipei Arena tonight (January 26) for the event.

For over a decade, KKBOX has held an awards show to celebrate the most trendy musicians based on the 12 billion streams and download clicks from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan within a calendar year.

Categories such as Artists of the Year, Best new Artist, Best Singer-songwriter and more will be presented at the show, which has confirmed a star-studded guest list which includes both Mandopop and international stars.

Among those who have been confirmed to perform on the show include Mandopop queens Karen Mok and Jolin Tsai, along with singer-songwriter Jam Hsiao. On the international front, internationally acclaimed DJ Alan Walker and Hallyu royalty Super Junior are among those who will be making appearances on the programme as well.

Read on for why you should be tuning in to watch the KKBOX Music Awards.

Karen Mok

What we hope she’ll perform: ‘Without You’. This song might be more than a decade old, but it’s definitely one of her classics.

International fans of Karen may know her for her extensive filmography, but this multi-talented artiste also has no less than 17 studio albums under her belt and the vocals to match. Her latest album, HALF TIME, was released last year after a four-year break and was met with a positive response as she also embarked on a concert tour to mark 25 years in showbiz.

Jam Hsiao

What we hope he’ll perform: ‘A Love Song For You’. This track, which is from his latest album Reflection of Desire, is not only the perfect song to belt out at a karaoke session, but also shows off Jam’s unique vocals perfectly.

Despite all the negative press that surrounded Jam in the past months, there’s one thing that has stayed consistent - his love and passion for music. This has been proven whenever he stands on the stage, and despite reportedly battling a serious case of jet lag when he was on the other side of the world for his concert tour, he still managed to pull it off to a tee. We can’t wait to see what he has in store on his home ground.

Jolin Tsai

What we hope she’ll perform: ‘Ugly Beauty’. This song was released less than a month ago and has already become an ear worm. We’re certain that the live version will be even better, especially with Jolin’s amazing stage presence.

Jolin might have shot to fame with ‘Magic’ back in 2003, but she’s shown that she’s still worthy of her Queen of C-Pop and Queen of Dance titles as she’s raised the bar for her own performances year after year. With the release of her latest studio album, ‘Ugly Beauty’, she’s also been praised by fans and critics alike for its amazing quality, and has done exceedingly well on the charts as well.

Super Junior

What we hope they’ll perform: ‘Sorry Sorry’. Years might have gone by but this is one song that we will never forget. Arguably their most famous track, there’s no way you can go wrong with this classic.

Super Junior has become the first foreign artiste to be awarded with the Artist of the Year award at the KKBOX Music Awards, and for good reason. The group has consistently stayed at the top of the charts for months at a time, and is among KKBOX’s best performing foreign acts. With the group soon to welcome its youngest, Kyuhyun, back from the military, the group is likely to be gearing up for a comeback soon, which is another reason to get excited for what’s to come in 2019.

Alan Walker

What we hope he’ll perform: ‘Faded’. With over two billion views on YouTube, it’s clear that this is one of Alan’s most well-loved songs. While It’s over three years old, it remains a staple on many of his gigs, and for good reason.

This DJ has put out bop after bop and is among one of the biggest names in EDM today. We hear that he might be collaborating with other artistes for his set at the KKBOX Music Awards, which leaves us to wonder who exactly he’ll be working with. I guess we’ll have to tune in to find out.

2019 KKBOX Music Awards will be streamed LIVE on Toggle tonight from 7pm.
